Natural Wild Gardens

Natural Wild Gardens I help people to create their own ecological gardens, growing food alongside interconnected habitats.

These habitats provide both a home and food for us humans, wild animals and plants. I am Niamh Ní Dhúill and I am based a few miles outside of Tralee, at the beginning of the Sliabh Mish Mountains. I have an acre here where I grow food and create wild habitats. I am a Nature and Biodiversity Educator
There are three main elements to my work

I do this by working with people to plan, develop and grow their own natural, ecological and wild gardens. Ecological gardening is all about creating interconnected habitats. My main work is in education and takes place mostly outdoors. I focus on:
- Establishing and growing cultivated food and herb remedy gardens
- Establishing and growing wild food in natural habitats
- Creating interconnected habitats such as small woodlands, native hedgerows, wildlife ponds, different wildflower lawns and meadows, compost heaps, log piles….. I work with Schools, Community Groups, Tidy Towns, Parishes, Organisations, Councils, Statutory Bodies, Local Businesses and Private Clients. I also develop educational resources, materials and programmes for clients. Recommended websites:

✨ A magical find at the top of the lake! ✨

Two Poplar Hawk Moths (Laothoe populi) were spotted here at Tralee Bay Wetlands Ecology Park, a rare chance to see these striking members of the Sphingidae family up close, which are a family of large moths widespread all over the world.

Ireland is home to 14 species, some resident and some migrant. Pictured here is the Poplar Hawk moth, so called as it is commonly found on the poplar tree (amongst other trees and plants).

What makes them even more fascinating?

🦋 Adult Poplar Hawk Moths don’t feed at all, they don’t have a functioning proboscis. Their adult life lasts only a few days, just long enough to mate and lay eggs.
🍃 They lay 50–100 eggs at a time on the underside of leaves.
🐛 Once hatched, the larvae enter their “hornworm” stage, named for the distinctive horn-like protrusion on their tail, used as a clever defence mechanism.

A beautiful reminder of the hidden wonders thriving all around us at our Ecology Park.

The Brat Bhride (Brigid's Cloak), is a piece of cloth, shawl, ribbon, handkerchief, or scarf that was tied or spread over a bush, tree, gate or on a window sill on 31st January - the eve before Brigid's Day.

It was put outside before sunset for Brigid to bless during the night as she passed by and then brought back inside before sunrise on 1st February.

This blessing by Brigid is thought to have given healing and protective qualities to the cloth which would be used in the home to help ease headaches, sore throat, and illness over the next 12 months.

It would be used too during childbirth and also to provide safety during a journey.

Planting a Native Forest has never been more attractive. Under our current Forestry Programme farmers and landowners can apply for grants to cover 100% of the cost of planting and fencing (where required) and avail of annual premiums worth €1,103 per hectare for up to 20 years which are income tax-free.

Planting a forest does not affect a farmer's entitlements under CAP and they can continue to claim the Basic Income Support for Sustainability (BISS) Scheme on their forested land, subject to the terms and conditions of the scheme.
