Paracetamol is used to treat pain and reduce fever (high temperature). Paracetamol is the first-choice painkiller in pregnancy and can be used throughout pregnancy when needed. It has been used safely by pregnant women for many years, and has been carefully studied by researchers. Recent reports questioned the safety of paracetamol use in pregnancy. There is no scientific consensus that paracetamol use in pregnancy causes autism.

It is important to treat pain and fever in pregnancy. If left untreated, maternal conditions may increase the chance of problems such as miscarriage, birth defects and early (pre-term) birth.

International experts and organisations such as the American College of Obstetricians (ACOG) and Gynecologists, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) in the UK, the Canadian Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and the European network of medicines in pregnancy specialists agree that paracetamol is safe in pregnancy.
