So lovely to be back in St. Francis Special School, Beaufort today 💛

I worked here eight years ago, so it really feels like a full circle moment. It is so nice to see some familiar faces again!

I’m really delighted that the school has secured funding so that every class can take part in music therapy groups between now and the end of term. Such a special thing for the students, and I feel very lucky to be part of it.

🎶 What Happens in a Music Therapy Session?

Every session is unique - because every person is different.
We might play instruments, sing, listen to music, move, or create sounds together. The goal isn’t to learn how to play music - it’s to use music as a tool to support emotional expression, communication, social connection, and wellbeing.

A big part of music therapy is improvisation - creating music in the moment.
Music therapists are specifically trained to listen and respond musically to each child’s needs, emotions, and cues. This allows the therapist to support communication, connection, and self-expression in a way that’s flexible and deeply personal.

Unlike music lessons, there’s no pressure to perform or get it “right.” Sessions are guided by the individual’s needs and led by the music we create together.

Music therapy can help children and adults express themselves, build confidence, and connect in meaningful ways. 💛

Music therapy is a clinical, evidence-based health profession where a qualified music therapist uses music to support emotional, social, communication, physical, and cognitive development.

It can involve playing instruments, singing, listening, moving to music, songwriting, or improvisation—always tailored to each person’s needs and abilities.

❌ It’s different to music education, music lessons, or entertainment — the focus is always on health, functioning, and well-being.
✅ It’s a therapeutic process with clear goals, grounded in professional training.

Music therapy can support children and adults of all abilities to express themselves, build skills, and connect in meaningful ways.

About me!

Hi, I’m Claire Adams (MA MT, BMus) — a qualified Music Therapist, Musician and Vocalist from Co. Kerry 🎶

I have several years’ experience working with babies to older adults with additional needs, intellectual disabilities, and mental health difficulties. My work has included paediatric and inpatient care, hospital settings, special needs schools, day services for adults with additional needs, and both inpatient and community day services for adults with mental health difficulties.

I currently offer:
🎵 One-to-one tailored music therapy sessions for children with additional needs.
🎵 One-to-one sessions for young adults and adults with additional needs or mental health difficulties.
🎵 Individual or group sessions within organizations (schools, services, and community groups).

I have made these boxers for a few years now. My husband says that they are the most comfortable boxers he has, unfortunately I don't always have the time to make more pairs for him, he will have to make do with christmas and birthday presents!.
