Homemade milk kefir is a nutrient-dense, fermented beverage that offers extensive digestive, immune, and metabolic health benefits. It typically contains up to 30 to 60 distinct strains of beneficial bacteria and yeasts, superior to any standard shop bought varieties. And it is quick, cheap and easy to make your own at home.
I make kefir regularly and as the grains multiply I have a surplus to give away to a ‘good home’.😅 If you would like some please contact me. First come first served basis!😁
The Benefits:
Powerful Microbiome Support: kefir’s gut-friendly probiotics actively colonize your digestive tract. This helps suppress harmful pathogens, reduces bloating, and regulates overall digestion.
Virtually Lactose-Free: live kefir grains consume the lactose (milk sugar) during the fermentation process. This breaks down the sugars into lactic acid, making it highly tolerable for individuals with lactose intolerance.
Immune System Boost: antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties strengthen your immune defense.
High Nutrient Density: It provides an exceptional source of highly bioavailable Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Vitamin B12, and Vitamin K2, which is critical for bone density and calcium metabolism.
Improved Protein Digestibility: The fermentation process pre-digests the milk proteins (casein), making them much easier for your stomach to break down and absorb.
Potential side effects:
While kefir is incredibly safe for most people, introducing a lot of new bacteria to your system too quickly can sometimes cause temporary digestive issues.
Initial Digestive Adjustment:
mild bloating, gas, or mild stomach cramping during first few days. Introduce kefir slowly, starting with 1-2 tablespoons per day, and gradually increase your intake.
Histamine Intolerance: Fermented foods are naturally high in histamines. If you suffer from severe histamine intolerance or Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), kefir may trigger symptoms like headaches or flushing.
