Stop assuming every red leg is cellulitis!

Redness alone is not enough to diagnose infection.

Many patients have red legs for different reasons like:
✨️Venous hypertension
✨️Chronic inflammation
✨️Venous eczema
✨️Lipodermatosclerosis
...these patients can end up being treated with multiple courses of antibiotics without improvement!

This is because the underlying caused is never addressed.

When you are assessing a red leg or legs, think about:
Is it unilateral or bilateral?
Is the patient systemically unwell?
Is there Chronic Oedema?
Are there skin changes suggesting venous disease?

Always start with a good assessment!!!!!

TREAT THE CAUSE, NOT THE COLOUR.

I would teach you the TIMES framework

T - Tissue
What kind of tissue do you see in the wound bed?

I- Infection
Are there signs of Infection? Do youneed system antibiotics or will a topical antimicrobial be enough?

M- Moisture
What are exudate levels like? Have they changed?

E- Edges
Do you see undermining/tunneling? Are there any scabs/calluses that nees to be dealth with?

S- Surrounding Skin
What does the wound look like? Macerated? Dry? Blisters? Oedema?

This framework is the basis of everything else you'll learn! If you don't have this, you might be missing something.

It would have to be wound assessment!!!
