Following the recent fire at the old Jute Factory in Tycor, Waterford city on Saturday evening (May 9th), asbestos-containing materials (ACM) have been identified in the fire-damaged structure and debris.

As a result of the fire and associated smoke plume, a limited amount of fire debris is understood to have been deposited on surrounding footpaths and roadways within the general vicinity of the site.

A specialist contractor has been appointed to conduct a precautionary clean-up of the affected external areas, and an independent asbestos consultancy has been appointed to monitor the environment throughout the remediation works.

๐Ÿ”” Update for Our Patients โ€“ Tycor Fire

As many of you will be aware, a major fire broke out in Tycor yesterday evening (Saturday 9 May). First and foremost, our thoughts are with the people and businesses affected and the firefighters who worked through the night to bring the blaze under control.

We want to reassure our patients that RoweCreavin Medical Practice will be open as normal tomorrow (Monday 11 May).

Our practice is approximately 300 metres from the fire site. We have completed a formal risk assessment this evening and are satisfied that the risk to staff and patients attending the practice is very low. Here is what we know:

โœ… The fire has been brought under control, with dampening operations continuing.

โœ… At 300 metres, we are well outside the immediate area affected. The streets that remain closed (Morrison's Avenue, Griffith Place, Tycor Avenue) do not affect access to our practice.

โœ… Waterford City and County Council is working with environmental consultants to assess the site, including any potential asbestos risk. We are monitoring their updates closely.

โœ… We will carry out a full check of the practice premises before opening tomorrow morning.

Any patients who feel they may have developed symptoms related to the incident please call the practice and we can arrange a review.

We will continue to monitor the situation throughout the week and will update you here if anything changes. If Waterford City and County Council or the HSE issue any new advice that affects our area, we will act on it immediately.

Your health and safety is always our priority.
