Social media can create the impression that children settle back into school life quickly and effortlessly.

The reality is often more complex.

Many families experience challenges during September and October, even when preparation has been thorough and support is in place.

This is an important reminder for parents and professionals alike: Progress is rarely linear.

Children may need time to adapt to changing routines, expectations, and environments. Temporary difficulties do not necessarily mean that previous progress has been lost.

Instead of asking, "Why is this happening again?" it can sometimes be more helpful to ask: "What additional support might be needed during this transition?"

A strengths-based reflection at this point in the year might include:
β€’ What went well in the past?
β€’ What helped?
β€’ What barriers emerged?

Being responsive rather than reactive can make a significant difference.

As the school year approaches, many parents are thinking about one thing already... lunches.

If your child experiences feeding or eating difficulties, lunchboxes can bring a lot of worry. For children, and for parents.

It can be tempting to use September as a fresh start and encourage lots of change. But during periods of transition, familiarity can be comforting.

A few things that may help:

Start thinking about lunches before the final weekend of the holidays

Involve your child in planning where appropriate

Remember that predictable foods can provide a sense of security during change

Focus on reducing stress rather than creating the "perfect" lunchbox

Give yourself permission to keep things simple

The return to school brings enough new experiences already.

Sometimes the most supportive thing we can offer a child is a little consistency while everything else is changing. πŸ’™

Sometimes, concerns about eating or feeding difficulties show up in places people don't expect, including dental health.

Changes in teeth, gums, or overall oral health can sometimes be one piece of a much bigger picture.

That doesn't mean dental concerns automatically point to a feeding or eating disorder. But it does remind us how closely our physical health and emotional wellbeing are connected.

The weeks before a new academic year can already feel full. There are uniforms to organise, routines to think about, and often a hope that having an assessment completed will bring a little more clarity and support for the year ahead.

What many people don't realise is that a psychological assessment doesn't end on the day of testing.

There is careful scoring, interpretation, report writing, and time spent bringing all of the information together in a way that is meaningful and useful for your child. Because of this, reports can take up to 28 days to complete.

So, if you are hoping to receive your assessment report by 31st August, the assessment itself will need to take place on or before 3rd August.

And that's now just 12 days away.
