TWO DAYS TO GO. TWO PLACES LEFT. In reply to some questions: The class is live and interactive on Zoom. It will be video recorded so if you miss a class you can catch up later. There will be no homework or assignments. I don't do the research for you - I give you the knowledge and skills to do your own research. The course fee may be paid in two stage payments if requested. A WORD OF WARNING: It starts out as an interest, then becomes a fascination, then an obsession!! All are very welcome. 💚

My latest family trees, still warm from the printer...

I've been working for the last couple of months with three mighty fine Traveller men at Pavee Point in Dublin on a great genealogy project . Everything came together beautifully yesterday with the unveiling of three large family trees at a wonderful community event at Finglas attended by the Lord Mayor of Dublin. I want to thank Michael Collins, Martin Reilly and Martin Collins for all their hard work, enthusiasm and dedication to this important cause. Their engagement with the older generation uncovered a goldmine of family lore and connections. Their gathering of almost two hundred photographs, some very evocative of a way of life now gone, really bring the family trees to life. Thanks also for making a 'countryman' like myself feel so welcome. (smiley face)
The project was co-sponsored by Dublin City Council Culture Company and The National Library of Ireland - who have requested that copies of the three family trees are given a permanent home at the NLI. (another smiley face...)
Michael Collins's family tree in the photo has 270 names, 84 photos, spans eight generations and rocking up at almost eight feet long is a new personal best for me!

The SEVEN SISTERS FAMILY TREE. This family tree - my biggest to date! - was unveiled yesterday in Cork and is the result of an enjoyable two month collaboration with the good women of the Cork Traveller Visibility Project. The Seven Sisters were the daughters of Terence Casey and Bridget McCarthy who were married in 1882 and many of those who worked on the project and are included in the tree are great grandchildren of one or other of the sisters. As well as 519 names the tree contains 225 photographs collected from all over Ireland and England. The family tree is on display for the next month at the Museum in Fitzgerald Park, Cork City. Entry is free.

TEN FAMILY TREES OFF TO TEN BROTHERS & SISTERS including three in Australia, one in England and one in America, the end point of a one year collaboration between myself and my client, a passionate family historian. Her many years of research and her photographs are now saved into a coherent and easily accessible form to be enjoyed by the whole family for many more years to come.

The photograph shows a bunch of Hennessys and friends on the move from Waterford to Annestown for a day at the beach.

FIVE TRAVELLER FAMILY TREES
I've just hung an exhibition of five Traveller family trees at the Central Library, Lady Lane. They will be there for the rest of Heritage Week. These family trees are the fruits of research undertaken in collaboration with members of the Waterford Traveller CDP in Ballybeg. The Travelling community has a rich heritage and I found the process fascinating, challenging and rewarding in equal measure. I look forward to continuing the association.
Why not pop in and have a look yourself? I'm sure you too will find them fascinating.
