📌 Save this post if you’re wondering what skills children typically develop during the preschool years.

Between the ages of 3 and 6, children continue to build the foundations for learning, friendships, communication and independence. Through play, conversation and everyday experiences, they develop skills across five key areas:

Every child develops at their own pace and will have their own unique strengths and areas of growth.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has updated its guidance on slush ice drinks containing glycerol.

The FSAI now advises that children aged 10 and under should not consume these drinks due to the potential risk of side effects.

Glycerol is used in some slush drinks to help maintain the “slush” effect, but consuming too much may cause symptoms including:

• Headaches
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Drowsiness
• Low blood sugar

The guidance is particularly important for younger children, who may be more affected due to their body weight.

With warmer weather and summer activities approaching, many families may not yet be aware of the updated advice.

🌈 A Child’s Development Journey: 0–3 Years 🌈

The first three years of life are filled with incredible growth and learning. From first smiles and first words to running, playing and building relationships, every new skill helps lay the foundation for future development.

In this carousel, we’ve explored four key areas of development:

💬 Communication & Language
🧠 Cognitive (Thinking & Learning)
🏃 Physical Development
❤️ Social-Emotional Development

Remember, developmental milestones are guides—not deadlines. Every child develops at their own pace and may reach skills slightly earlier or later than others.

✨ What matters most is providing opportunities to play, connect, explore and learn through everyday experiences.

If you have concerns about your child’s development, trust your instincts and seek advice. Early support can make a meaningful difference.

❤️ Celebrate every step, every effort and every achievement along the way.

Small toys can create BIG opportunities for connection, communication and learning 💛

Doll play is more than “just playing” — it helps children build:
✨ Language and conversation skills
✨ Imagination and storytelling
✨ Emotional understanding
✨ Social interaction
✨ Everyday life skills through routines

The best learning happens when children feel engaged, connected and free to explore play in their own way.

Try these simple doll play ideas at home 👇

🛁 Bath time play
Wash, dry and dress the doll while using simple words:
“Wash tummy!” “Dry feet!” “Hat on!”

🛏 Bedtime routine
Act out bedtime with furniture and dolls:
“Night night.” “Blanket on.” “Shhh baby sleeping.”

🍽 Pretend mealtime
Feed dolls together and model everyday language:
“More juice?” “Hot soup!” “Yummy banana!”

🚗 Going out adventure
Use dolls and furniture to create little stories:
“Baby sits in chair.” “Let’s go shop!” “Teddy is tired.”

💬 Follow your child’s ideas
Instead of asking lots of questions, try commenting on what they’re doing:
“You’re putting baby to bed.”
“Baby is hiding!”
“That chair is so tiny!”

🌱 Add just one more word
If your child says “baby sleep,” you can model:
“Baby is sleeping.”
No pressure — just natural language during play.

❤️ Play doesn’t need to look a certain way to be meaningful. Shared moments, connection and enjoyment are what matter most.

Farm animal play is full of opportunities for connection, communication and learning 🐷🐮🐥

You don’t need complicated toys or long activities — simple, playful moments together help children build language, attention, confidence and interaction skills.

Try these easy farm play ideas 👇

🐷 1. Animal sounds play
Make animal noises together:
“moo moo”
“quack quack”
“oink oink”

Tip: copying sounds, actions and facial expressions helps support early communication and interaction skills.

🏠 2. Hide & find
Hide the animals inside the barns and open them together.

Try:
“Where’s pig?”
“Open!”
“There it is!”

Tip: pausing before opening the door gives children time to anticipate, respond or communicate in their own way.

🌈 3. Colour & counting fun
Match colours or count animals as you play.

Try:
“Red barn.”
“2 ducks!”
“More blocks?”

Tip: keeping language short, playful and repetitive helps children understand and join in naturally.

The best play moments happen when adults slow down, follow the child’s interests and enjoy the interaction together 💛

Play is one of the most powerful ways to build connection and interaction with your child 💙

When children feel safe, understood and engaged, communication grows naturally through shared moments of joy, curiosity and shared interests.

Here are play ideas to support interaction at home:

🫧 1. Bubble Pause
Blow bubbles, then pause and wait expectantly before blowing more. This creates opportunities for your child to look, gesture, vocalise or communicate in their own way to continue the game.

🚗 2. Copy My Play
Sit alongside your child and copy what they’re doing with toys, sounds or movements. Joining their play shows interest in their world and supports shared attention and connection.

🎵 3. Ready… Steady… GO!
Use repetitive games like rolling a ball, pushing a car, jumping or tickles. Pause before “GO!” to build anticipation, turn-taking and joyful interaction.

🎮 4. Join Their Interests
Older children often connect best through their interests. Whether it’s Minecraft, Lego, animals, drawing or gaming, follow their lead and show genuine curiosity rather than directing the interaction.

🎲 5. Cooperative Challenges
Try activities where you work together towards a shared goal — building a den, baking, scavenger hunts, escape-room style puzzles or collaborative board games. These naturally support communication, problem-solving and connection without pressure.

Remember: interaction is not about making children communicate in a certain way. It grows through feeling safe, valued and connected 💫

23/05/2026

Shape sorters can be more than just toys — they can support connection, communication, problem-solving, and joyful play for children of all abilities. 💛

There’s no “right” way to play. Some children may sort shapes, some may line them up, explore textures, dump them out, or enjoy opening and closing the lid — all of these are meaningful ways to learn and interact. 🌱

Through playful interaction, shape sorters can support:
✨ Fine motor skills
✨ Visual attention
✨ Problem-solving
✨ Early language and communication
✨ Turn-taking and shared interaction
✨ Sensory exploration

Here are 3 simple ways to use a shape sorter at home 👇

⭐ 1. Follow Your Child’s Lead
Watch what interests your child and join their play.
If they enjoy putting shapes in and out, narrate what they’re doing:

🗣 “In!”
🗣 “You found the star!”
🗣 “Open… close!”

Following a child’s interests supports engagement, connection, and communication.

🎨 2. Shape Hunt & Match
Pick one shape and look for similar shapes around the house:
• “Can you find another circle?”
• “This plate is round like the circle!”

This builds:
✔ Attention
✔ Visual discrimination
✔ Language development
✔ Real-world connections

🤲 3. Take Turns Together
Try rolling shapes to each other, passing pieces, or helping each other fit shapes into the sorter.

Use simple phrases like:
💬 “My turn, your turn”
💬 “Help?”
💬 “We did it!”

Shared play helps build connection, communication, and confidence — without pressure or expectations.

Remember: play should feel safe, enjoyable, and flexible. Children learn best when they feel connected, supported, and free to explore in their own way. 🌈

🧠🥔 More than just fun… Potato Head is packed with opportunities for learning, play, and communication!

As parents play alongside their child, this classic toy becomes a powerful way to build communication, fine motor skills, creativity, and confidence. 💛

✨ Try these simple play ideas:
• Name body parts and describe where they go
• Talk about colors, emotions, and silly combinations
• Practice turn-taking and sharing pieces
• Encourage problem-solving by asking “Where does this piece fit?”
• Strengthen little hands through grasping, twisting, and placing pieces

💬 Playing together also creates opportunities for connection:
“Can you find the eyes?”
“Let’s make a funny face!”
“What happens if we swap the ears and nose?”

Through play, children are learning language, coordination, imagination, and social skills — all while having FUN. 🎉

Play together. Learn together. Grow together. 🌱
