⚠️ Mistaken Identity: Wild Plant Poisoning Leads to Rambam ICU

Two men recently found themselves fighting for their health in Rambam’s Intensive Care Unit after mistaking tree to***co (Nicotiana glauca) for an edible wild plant and consuming it in a soup.

Unlike cultivated to***co, wild tree to***co contains the toxic alkaloid anabasine, which can cause severe symptoms ranging from dizziness and respiratory failure to seizures. Thanks to the quick thinking of the patients—who brought a sample of the plant to the hospital—Rambam’s medical team and volunteer botanists were able to identify the poison instantly and provide life-saving care.

🌿 Dr. Yael Lurie, Director of the National Poison Information Center at Rambam, urges the public: “Never pick, brew, or eat wild plants unless positively identified by qualified experts. If poisoning is suspected, always bring the source to the emergency department.”

32 Years Later: History Repeats at Rambam

Sometimes life writes the most unbelievable parallels. Recently, a family found themselves at Rambam Health Care Campus in Haifa, witnessing a generational echo of history under wartime circumstances.

Twenty-one-year-old Avi*- serving in the elite Yahalom Unit of the IDF Combat Engineering Corps - was seriously wounded in a Hezbollah drone attack in Southern Lebanon and evacuated directly to Rambam.

In a poignant twist of fate, exactly 32 years ago, Avi's father, Haim, was injured in Lebanon and similarly airlifted to Rambam, where his own mother stood by his bedside through a difficult recovery. Today, Haim and his mother find themselves back at the hospital, this time supporting Avi as he receives critical care.

Despite the profound challenges and a painfully familiar road ahead, the family draws strength from deep resilience. Thanks to a rapid emergency response in the field and the dedicated medical team at Rambam, Avi's life was saved.

"My grandson is strong, and he will get through this," shares his grandmother, returning to the halls she walked over three decades ago.

Our thoughts are with Avi, his family, and the two other soldiers wounded in the attack as we wish them all a full and speedy recovery.

Following the IDF Spokesperson’s announcement this morning, four soldiers injured in yesterday’s incident in southern Lebanon were evacuated by helicopter to the Shock Trauma Room at Rambam Health Care Campus. Their condition remains serious.

By combining clinical expertise, industrial metal 3D printing, and cutting-edge CAD software, a dedicated team of physicians and engineers will now design and produce customized, patient-specific implants directly at the point of care.

This framework streamlines the entire process—integrating design, manufacturing, and quality control within the hospital. For patients, this means a better anatomical fit, higher surgical accuracy, and significantly faster treatment and recovery times.

The Brave Decision That Saved a Life

Captain Malachi Moundani was rushed to Rambam in critical condition after being wounded during combat in Southern Lebanon. Once his condition had stabilized, imaging revealed an extraordinary and life-threatening finding: a piece of shrapnel had penetrated his body and come to rest just millimeters from his aorta where the slightest movement could have torn the body's main artery, causing catastrophic bleeding and almost certain death.

Because cases like this are exceptionally rare, they are scarcely documented in the medical literature. Despite the enormous risk, Rambam's cardiac surgery and trauma specialists were forced to make a courageous decision: operate rather than leave the shrapnel in place.

In an exceptionally delicate and complex surgical procedure, Dr. Tzvi Adler and Dr. Kamal Morshed of the Department of Cardiac Surgery, under the leadership of Department Director Professor Gil Bolotin, successfully removed the shrapnel, saving Malachi's life and eliminating the danger.

In moments like these, when medical instinct meets years of experience, the skill, judgment, and dedication of our physicians make all the difference. Thanks to their expertise, Malachi is with us today smiling and continuing his recovery.

This week marks 20 years since Rambam Health Care Campus received the first casualties of the Second Lebanon War (2006) a defining event that transformed the approach to hospital protection and emergency preparedness across Israel’s healthcare system.

During that war, and for the first time under the direct threat of missile attacks on Haifa, Rambam continued to operate without a modern protected infrastructure. When hundreds of civilians were treated, and approximately 200 wounded soldiers arrived directly from the frontline, the lessons learned during that intense month of fighting became a catalyst for change.

Professor Lior Gepstein, Director of the Division of Cardiology and the Division of Research at Rambam Health Care Campus and a faculty member at the Technion's Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, has been awarded the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant.

This is his fourth ERC grant in recent years an impressive achievement that once again highlights Gepstein’s status as one of the world's leading researchers.

Thanks to the €3.375 million grant, Professor Gepstein will lead the development of advanced 3D models of human heart tissue, combined with innovative optogenetic technologies. The main goal is to deepen understanding and develop effective, groundbreaking treatments for life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation and ventricular arrhythmias.

Can a 20-Minute Sound Wave Treatment Break the Cycle of Opioid Addiction?

For years, H. was trapped in a cycle of dependence. What began as medication to relieve pain following a neck injury escalated into an addiction to 130 pills a day.
Recently, Rambam became the first medical center in Israel to perform a groundbreaking treatment for opioid addiction using novel sound wave technology. The procedure was made possible by a unique Israeli innovation developed by Insightec as part of an international clinical study being conducted at select medical centers in the United States and now at Rambam.

The multidisciplinary team, led by Dr. Lior Lev-Tov, Director of the Functional Neurosurgery Unit, and Dr. Amir Minerbi, Director of the Rambam Institute for Pain Medicine, performed targeted modulation of the brain's electrical activity. Using focused ultrasound technology, they precisely targeted the nucleus accumbens the brain's reward center, which plays a key role in pleasure, motivation, and addictive behaviors.

Immediately following the procedure, H. reported that the cravings that had plagued him for years had disappeared. One week later, he was completely free of opioids and had also experienced a dramatic reduction in his need for ci******es and alcohol results that underscore the remarkable potential of this technology to transform addiction treatment.

This breakthrough demonstrates how the combination of Israeli innovation and medical expertise can redefine what is possible and offer new hope to patients struggling with addiction.
