*I must turn in all things to the Father of Light*

In the on page 13, starting in the bottom paragraph, it says:

“Belief in the power of God, plus enough willingness, honesty and humility to establish and maintain the new order of things, were the essential requirements.”

Today I realize that, when I first came into the program, I thought that there was a simple goal. I thought it was for me to come to believe in the existence of God. I later thought that I also had to believe that God is all-powerful.

I now know that just believing in God, or that He is all-powerful, is not enough.

I am grateful to Recoveries Anonymous, because I now understand that I had to develop an entirely new relationship with God. I have learned that this program requires me to be willing, honest, and humble.

I had to admit that I am powerless. But most importantly, I have discovered that it was essential for me to let God destroy my self-centeredness. This might be simple in theory, but it is not easy to put into practice.

In R.A., I discovered that I had to make a decision to place every part of my life under God’s care and direction.

In the Big Book, on page 14, in the first paragraph, it says

“Simple, but not easy; a price had to be paid. It meant destruction of self‑centeredness.

I must turn in all things to the Father of Light who presides over us all.”

*Faith in some kind of God was a part of our make‑up*

In the Big Book, on page 55, in the second paragraph, it says:

“Actually we were fooling ourselves, for deep down in every man, woman, and child, is the fundamental idea of God. It may be obscured by calamity, by pomp, by worship of other things, but in some form or other it is there.

For faith in a Power greater than ourselves, and miraculous demonstrations of that power in human lives, are facts as old as man himself.”

Today I realize how limited my original view of God was. For most of my life, I refused to believe in God. I did not accept that He played any role in my everyday life.

I even used my life, my problems, and behaviors, to fool myself into thinking that I had removed every last part of my belief in God.

I now know that faith in God was always a part of my make-up. This was true, even though I had tried to ignore it.

Thanks to Recoveries Anonymous, when I searched diligently, I found this Great Reality deep within me. I became aware that I did believe in God.

Working this program within R.A. has allowed me to develop a relationship with a loving God. He does for me what I could never do for myself.

He has restored me to sanity.

He has granted me my recovery.

In the Big Book, on page 55, in the third paragraph, it says:

“We finally saw that faith in some kind of God was a part of our make‑up, just as much as the feeling we have for a friend. Sometimes we had to search fearlessly, but He was there. He was as much a fact as we were.

We found the Great Reality deep down within us. In the last analysis it is only there that He may be found. It was so with us.”

*We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves*

In the Big Book, on page 52, in the second paragraph, it says:

“We were having trouble with personal relationships, we couldn’t control our emotional natures, we were a prey to misery and depression, we couldn’t make a living, we had a feeling of uselessness, we were full of fear, we were unhappy, we couldn’t seem to be of real help to other people—

was not a basic solution of these bedevilments more important than whether we should see newsreels of lunar flight?”

Today I realize how overwhelmed I was by all the problems I had in my life. I knew that I had to find a way out of these troubles.

However, before I knew the potential of this program, a solution seemed as likely as my taking a trip to the moon.

I now know that the Recoveries Anonymous program “promises” me an answer to all my problems.

As the result of my efforts to carefully work the Twelve Steps within R.A., I was amazed before I was half way through making my amends. I have now developed a conscious contact with a loving God who does for me all those things I could never do for myself.

He has solved all my problems. By His grace, I no longer hurt others. I no longer harm myself. I have recovered.

In the Big Book, on page 83, starting in the bottom paragraph, it says:

“If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through. We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.

We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace.

No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others. That feeling of uselessness and self‑pity will disappear.

We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows. Self‑seeking will slip away. Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change.

Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us. We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us.

We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.”

*We must be willing to grow*

In the Big Book, on page 69, in the second paragraph, it says:

“We asked God to mold our ideals and help us to live up to them.”

Today I realize that I desperately wanted to be in control of my life. When I first came into the program, I thought it would give me the ability to set my own goals and fulfill them.

I now know that only God has the power to shape my ideals.

By working all Twelve Steps within Recoveries Anonymous, as detailed in the Big Book, I have developed a conscious contact with a loving God.

Thanks to R.A., I have learned that I can now ask Him to guide and direct me in all things.

I ask Him to shape my ideals and grant me the willingness to grow towards them.

In the Big Book, on page 69, in the third paragraph, it says:

“Whatever our ideal turns out to be, we must be willing to grow toward it.”

Do not be discouraged

In the , on page 117, in the second paragraph, it says:

“You will make mistakes, but if you are in earnest they will not drag you down. Instead, you will capitalize them. A better way of life will emerge when they are overcome.”

Today I realize that, before I came into the program, I would use my mistakes as proof of my incompetence. I would beat myself up because I couldn’t seem to stop hurting others, or myself.

I now know that, although I am not “able to maintain anything like perfect adherence” to this program’s spiritual principles, I should not be discouraged.

I am grateful to Recoveries Anonymous, because I have learned that, even though the pioneers were not able to work this program perfectly, they still recovered.

I now understand that fully working all Twelve Steps of this program has allowed God to turn my mistakes into assets. I have learned to trust Him in every situation.

In R.A., I have discovered that God knows what is better for me than I do. He has brought me to a much better way of life. He has restored me to sanity and granted me my recovery.

In the Big Book, on page 60, in the second paragraph, it says:

“Do not be discouraged. No one among us has been able to maintain anything like perfect adherence to these principles.”

Another R.A. member shares:

"Remind yourself that you have decided to go to any length to find a spiritual experience. Ask that you be given strength and direction to do the right thing, no matter what the personal consequence to you."
(R.A.'s Multilith , p 36)

Personally, this is so helpful to me. I have found a fellowship where I belong! What is so great about this is that I am not alone, and have the R.A. program which understands me and gives me precise directions on how to move forward. If there is hope for me, there is hope for anyone! Thank you, R.A!. Thank you, G-d!

An R.A. member shares:
"The only requirement for RA membership is a desire to recover."
(R.A.'s Third Tradition)

And in the AA 12&12 on page 139, there is this explanation of the Third Tradition:

"This Tradition is packed with meaning....You can declare yourself in; nobody can keep you out. No matter who you are, no matter how low you've gone, no matter how grave your emotional complications-even your crimes-we still can't deny you..., we don't want to keep you out. We aren't a bit afraid you'll harm us, never mind how twisted or violent you may be. We just want to make sure you get the same great chance for sobriety as we've had..."

When I first came to program 15 years ago, there was a member who shared about having been in prison. And his share was so powerful and solution-focused, that it was uplifting!

Here was a person who had really hit bottom; and hitting bottom is the necessary requirement to go up much higher, right into the arms of your loving Higher Power and the warmth and friendship of your RA friends.

I have found this heartwarming. It gives a lot of realistic hope! It works. Try it!

*The total failure of their human resources*

In the Big Book, on page 45, in the top paragraph, it says:

“Our human resources, as marshalled by the will, were not sufficient; they failed utterly.”

Today I realize how easy it was for me to accept an old idea. I thought that I was responsible for my own recovery.

I felt that it was up to me to stop my problems and behaviors. I believed it was only a matter of gathering my energies and focusing them.

I now know that fully working all Twelve Steps has fulfilled the program’s “few simple requirements.”

I am grateful to Recoveries Anonymous, because I have learned that I needed to do this if I wanted to become, and then stayrecovered.

Working R.A.’s program placed me into conscious contact with a loving God. He has done for me what I couldn’t do for myself. He has restored me to sanity and guided me to the permanent recovery this program promises.

In the Big Book, on page 50, in the bottom paragraph, it says:

“In the face of collapse and despair, in the face of the total failure of their human resources, they found that a new power, peace, happiness, and sense of direction flowed into them. This happened soon after they wholeheartedly met a few simple requirements.”

*Without help it is too much for us*

In the Big Book, on page 58, in the third paragraph, it says:

“We thought we could find an easier, softer way. But we could not.”

Today I realize that, when I was new to the program, I tried to find an easier, softer way to stop harming others, and myself. I put an amazing amount of time and energy into this effort.

Actually, this was probably much harder than if I had just followed the pioneers’ “clear-cut directions” that are in the Big Book. It would have been easier to have simply worked the Twelve Steps.

I now know that working this program is really the easier, softer way to stop hurting others, or myself.

Fully working all Twelve Steps within Recoveries Anonymous has allowed me to develop a conscious contact with an all-powerful, loving God.

He now does for me all those things I could never do for myself. He stops me from hurting myself.

Thanks to R.A., He is granting me a sane, productive life.

In the Big Book, on page 58, starting in the bottom paragraph, it says:

“Remember that we deal with alcohol—cunning, baffling, powerful! Without help it is too much for us. But there is One who has all power—that One is God. May you find Him now!”
