Hadassah Johanna Hazan - Therapist - Clinical MSW LCMSW specialising in attachment & relational trauma, sexual trauma, self esteem and body image

I specialise in working with attachment and relational issues (disrupted attachment in childhood, sexual trauma (both from a long time ago and more recent), and the plethora of reasons people can struggle with self-love, self-acceptance and connecting to others. I have worked for nearly a decade in the field of eating disorder and body image difficulties, and also with people struggling with aspec

ts of their identity such as sexuality, religious or spiritual shifts and major life transitions. I love and utilise both Narrative Therapy and IFS, as well as tools from CBT and DBT, however I believe the most powerful interventions come from authentic human connection and approach treatment to each of my clients individually. I have previously worked as a therapist at Milam, working with family systems affected by serious mental illness; and as Assistant Director of Mental Health at Jewessence, a residential program for young women from Ultra Orthodox Jewish homes who are overcoming emotional and mental health challenges. I am a founding board member of the AZ House - residential recovery facility in Jerusalem

I’m open minded, approachable and creative in my practice and I enjoy working with diverse populations, though mainly work with women. I have worked with clients ranging in age from 15 to 71, from a variety of backgrounds.

Not every client needs more motivation. Sometimes they need less shame.

When people feel ashamed of their behavior, they may hide it, minimize it, or avoid asking for help altogether.

Creating a space where someone can speak honestly doesn't mean removing accountability.

It means creating the conditions for an honest conversation about what they want and what might need to change.

Do you agree or disagree?

I'd genuinely like to hear your perspective.

I like to share this video with clients who have eating disorders who are fairly “left brain led”, as part of my explanation for why they can’t “just stop”, and for why as their therapist I won’t advise them to “just suck it up and get on another meal plan”

Even CBT isn’t enough. Thinking and doing are sooo important and are amazing. But without feeling and sensing there’s something missing.

We can teach and train ourselves to “do” a lot, but if we aren’t ultimately feeling safe, feeling connected, able to hold any pain or discomfort that may arise (with awareness and compassion) we can’t maintain that thinking and doing for long without collapsing.

MY mind is blown

Mishpacha magazine has published an article about the therapeutic use of psychedelics.
It discussed how in the frum world, increasingly this work is happening on the underground (namely because the FDA has only approved the use of ketamine so far, at least here in Israel).
The article discusses how this work; when done safely and responsibly with people who know what they’re doing, can change and even save lives. It can heal deeply and in profound and long lasting ways.
We must not ignore the potential harm that can be done too: inexperienced people (even or especially well meaning people), can cause irreversible harm by administering these medicines without training or proper know how.

But when done properly, this work is indeed unlike any other I have encountered (professionally as well as personally).

Mishpacha is the “establishment” of frum life. Too frum for pictures of women; too frum for anything deemed as potentially too modern for the sensitivities of the Charedi world. And for them to publish this is groundbreaking. But also, how could they not, when such vast swathes of the community they publish for are engaging in this.

Read for yourself.

Hadassah Hazan — "The Search for Safety"

Asking someone to abandon an eating disorder without first understanding what it has been protecting them from, she writes, is like asking them to step out of a shelter before another place of safety exists. Most of her clients know exactly what it's costing them — and have fought it for years. So the question that changes everything isn't "What is wrong with me?" but "What is this doing for me?"

This is just a taste of Hadassah Hazan's "The Search for Safety" in the Elul issue of Chibur. Sign up free to read it 👇
