The Shaare Zedek Medical Center community mourns the loss of our dear friend Hillel Lebovits z”l who passed away yesterday following a lengthy illness.

Hillel served as one of the senior members of the Executive Committee of Shaare Zedek’s Board of Directors. A highly respected and accomplished educator, he was an instrumental figure in the Jerusalem educational community.

His relationship with Shaare Zedek spans more than 40 years. In his capacity with the Board, he acted with dedication and compassion volunteering to advance the mission of our hospital - and ensure its forward development on behalf of the people of Jerusalem and Israel.

Hillel was a man of tremendous vision, and always someone who sought to take ideas and transform them into action.

He sought out unique ways to help those in need and his life’s legacy will be defined by that pursuit of charitable giving and caring – always with humility and uncompromising integrity.

Perhaps his greatest achievement was his ability to pay attention to the needs of the individual, a trait which motivated his passion for each and every one of our hospital’s patients.

His demeanor that endeared him to everyone he met will be sorely missed, and his memory will always remain dear within the Shaare Zedek family through the countless projects his life's work helped make possible.

We express our deep condolences to Rachel, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

When Sarah Levy of Jerusalem was informed that she was pregnant with a particularly rare and complex triplet pregnancy composed of identical twins sharing one placenta and then a third fetus- she and her husband realized they were facing a particularly challenging and potentially dangerous time ahead. They were informed that ensuring the continued viability of the pregnancy and the health of the mother and fetuses demanded they consider a range of potential options.

The couple sought out the advice of Dr. Tamar Shalem, Director of the Maternity B Unit in the Wilf Woman and Infant Center at Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center who extensively reviewed the case before determining that with careful monitoring and care the pregnancy could progress safely.

That advice proved to be the medical blessing the couple needed and this week Sarah and her husband returned with their hands full carrying their three sons, alongside their older sister. The babies are all healthy and full of life and happily keeping their parents busy.

The couple expressed their immense gratitude saying, “We immediately felt that we were in the best possible hands, the professional guidance combined with empathy and a sense that we could always turn to them whatever the need . In particular the caring of Dr. Shalem is a big part of what gave us the strength, hope and calm to persevere even in the more difficult moments.”

The triplets were delivered by Ceserean Section at 28 weeks of the pregnancy, with each baby born weighing over a kilogram (2.2 lbs). They were cared for in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Shaare Zedek for about two months before being released strong and healthy.

Dr. Shalem explained, “This was a particularly rare and challenging pregnancy that combined the risks of any triplet pregnancy together with that of identical twins sharing one placenta. We accompanied the couple throughout the whole process and to our great joy the story concluded with three healthy babies. We all share the joy of the Levy family and wish these three boys lives of health, happiness and a lot of fun alongside each other. We want to thank the incredible staff of our NICU at Shaare Zedek that helped these babies grow with their dedication and professionalism until we were able to send them home in their parents arms.”

The Glaubach Department of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center recently recorded two very similar cases that serve as a warning sign for parents of young children.

Over the course of just twelve hours two young patients presented after having ingested a potentially harmful liquid inside a keyring. The children, aged 11 months and 18 months, arrived at the hospital with their parents describing how they had chewed open the key chain and swallowed some of the liquid inside.

One of the children had apparently ingested enough of the substance that he presented looking dazed while the second was displaying initial signs of respiratory distress indicating the liquid had reached the lungs.

After confirming the causes behind their symptoms, both children were admitted for observation and continued treatment.

Dr. Matti Erlichman, Senior Physician in the Pediatric ER explained, “While we don’t know the exact nature of the liquid that is inside these keychains, we know that there are many similar types of products being sold on the market. It’s very important that parents be aware of these dangers and ideally they should refrain from buying such products if they have children around and certainly be careful to avoid exposing kids to the chance they will find them and put them in their mouths.”

Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center is the first hospital in Israel as to embrace an innovative gene therapy.

The approach, which brings hope for other patients with similar conditions, spared a young patient the need for a complex dual kidney and liver transplant and has set him on the road to a healthier and stronger lifestyle.

At just five months old, Yusef Shweki, who is now three, began receiving dialysis treatments six times a week at Shaare Zedek.

He suffers from a rare genetic condition that caused his liver to produce high amounts of oxolate that was accumulating in his kidneys. The disease was destroying his kidneys and threatened other organs and parts of his body.

Most children with Yusef’s diagnosis would have to endure a long and complex medical path requiring long-term dialysis while awaiting the chance for a dual transplant of both the liver and kidney.

From early on in his treatment, Yusef was cared for in the Rothberg Department of Pediatric Nephrology where the Lesley and Leon Berman Paediatric Dialysis Unit became almost a second home for him and his family.

Alongside the intensive course of dialysis, his medical team began treating him with lumasiran, a groundbreaking drug designed to completely stop the liver’s production of oxolate with the goal of neutralizing the origins of the disease. Shaare Zedek is a main center of clinical care and research responsible for securing the regulatory approval of the drug leading to it’s introduction to the national healthcare basket.

As a result of the multiple approaches to his care, Yusef’s body began to respond positively and reject the negative impacts of the oxolate and he began to grow in size and strength. Earlier this year, after close monitoring of his condition, the Shaare Zedek team made the decision to proceed with a kidney transplant without the need to transplant his liver. Since undergoing the procedure, his condition has continued to improve.

Dr. Efrat Ben Shalom, Director of the Rothberg Department of Pediatric Nephrology explains, “This is truly a milestone-setting moment for Israeli medicine that positions us on the forefront of global medical science and will provide a sense of hope for many patients and families. Our multi-disciplinary team accompanied Yusef and his family around the clock with the goal of developing a customized treatment regiment in response to a very complicated medical reality. Yusef will continue to be administered lumasiran to protect his new kidney and we all bless him with many more years of good health.”

Yedida Rabi, Head Nurse in the Berman Paediatric Dialysis Unit added, “We’ve been proud to offer Yusef and his family years of exceptional professional and dedicated care since he was just five months old. To see him, a child who first came here as a sick baby that required daily dialysis care, now after his transplant, smiling and riding his scooter provides us all with a great sense of excitement and a real appreciation of the power to overcome illness.”

MOH Report Establishes Shaare Zedek As Preferred Choice for Key Surgeries

A recent report from Israel’s Ministry of Health has established that Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center is Israel’s most preferred publicly-serving hospital for five key surgical procedures: cataracts, ear tube implantations, hernia repair, gallblader procedures and prostate surgeries.

In addition, Shaare Zedek is found to have the lowest waiting times for these procedures in the Jerusalem area and among the lowest in all of Israel. The statistics were part of a comprehensive analysis of elective procedures performed in Israel over the course of 2024 among the country’s publicly available hospitals.

Shaare Zedek through the Wohl Surgical Operating Complex that performs over 45,000 surgeries annually, particularly stands out in performance of general and urology procedures with 1,488 hernia procedures, 801 gallbladder surgeries and 544 prostate procedures.

The ENT surgical unit performed 803 ear tube implantations. In all these areas, the hospital was found to have considerably shortened waiting times. The hospital performed the most cataract procedures among the non-private hospitals with 3,229 performed as compared to 2,444 by the next Israeli hospital in this category.

Shaare Zedek came in second in the national survey in performing hysterectomies and tonsillectomies, and in third for bariatric and colorectal surgeries.

Shaare Zedek Director General Prof. Ofer Merin said, “The high level of care alongside the accessibility and quick response we offer the community is part of a our ongoing commitment to always expand and enhance our services which is reflected in the growing number of people from both Jerusalem and all across Israel who choose us for elective surgical care. Every procedure, regardless of the level of complexity and whether its urgent or elective demands high levels of professionalism as well as compassion and understanding for the individual needs of our patients and their families. We firmly believe that this combined focus defines the historic commitment of our staff and has established our legacy of comprehensive care in response to the needs of the people of Jerusalem and Israel.”

Following the quick and professional intervention of medical teams at Jerusalem's Shaare Zedek Medical Center, the life of a one-year-old child, who had not received the recommended course of infant vaccinations, was saved after arriving in the hospital in a life-threatening condition.

The case began when the infant was brought by ambulance to the Glaubach Department of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Shaare Zedek in serious condition. While first responders initially suspected the boy had attempted to swallow a foreign object which had become lodged in his throat, initial clinical examinations by the emergency room physicians determined that not to be the case.

Upon discussion with the boy’s father, the hospital teams understood the baby was unvaccinated which led them to surmise he has been infected with the infection, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) which had caused the tightening of his throat. Further clinical and lab testing confirmed that initial diagnosis.

With the patient exhibiting extreme breathing complications, the pediatric anesthesiology team at Shaare Zedek, led by Dr. Mordechai Sherki and Dr. Shmuel Basmut, with the assistance of nurses Naava Vanda and Benny Greenwald, immediately began a complex intubation procedure to stabalize the patient.

Dr. Efrat Blankenstein, a resident physician in the Department of Pediatric explained, “This child was literally minutes away from dying. This is a rare case that we haven’t seen at Shaare Zedek in several decades based on our review with senior physicians and until now had been the type of theoretical case that we only train for. If the baby had undergone the proper round of vaccinations, this could have been completely avoided. And if our trauma teams weren’t prepared with the proper equipment and staffing support, there is no doubt this story could have had a completely different ending.”

“Incidence of these types of cases where infections constrict the throat have gone down considerably due to a common vaccine used to address Hib,” explained Dr. Shani Messner-Fieiereisen, a resident in the Pediatric Department. “This condition can lead to an infection around the cartilage tissue that is designed to prevent food from entering into the treacha and when inflamed it can block the respiratory tract. Symptoms can appear suddenly and intensify very quickly.”

Dr. Moria Paizer-Rosenberg from the ENT Department at Shaare Zedek added, “The initial report came that the baby was chocking as a result of something he had eaten. But we quickly determined that it was something else altogether based on the fiber-optic imaging scan we performed to view the child’s upper respiratory tract and to see if there was indeed a blockage. We are all deeply grateful that we were able to save the child’s life due to the close cooperation between all our teams that enabled us to provide the immediate life-saving intervention he needed at that time.”

Talk about coincidences…

With over 20,000 babies born annually, the maternity department at Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center has plenty of incredible stories to tell.

But this one truly boggles the imagination.

Two brothers, identical twins, Moshe and Yosef Mizrachi were blessed to both see the birth of baby daughters on the very same day in 2024.

Flash forward two years and the incredible repeated itself when the two twins returned with their wives to Shaare Zedek to give birth once again on the very same day…

The only difference this time, both babies were boys!

Moshe and Yosef said, "Thanks so much to the amazing teams of the delivery rooms and the Maternity Ward C for their professionalism and dedication in sharing our most special moments."

Shaare Zedek wishes the families a huge Mazel Tov, health, happiness and many moments of togetherness and joy and we look forward to seeing you again soon...
