After several years of working as a Chiropractor I’ve realized that many people don’t know what a Chiropractor does. Here is a common conversation I have with people who are new to Chiropractic treatment:
- Oh, so you are a Chiropractor. Are you a doctor?
Yes, I am a doctor of Chiropractic and have gone through many years of extensive training at
University. Chiro- means ‘by hand’ and, unlike doctors of medicine, Chiropractors use
hands-on/manual therapy instead of medicine to treat patients.
- Interesting, what do you treat?
Chiropractors are experts in treating back and neck pain, headaches, as well as sports injuries
and postural disorders. Our care involves the diagnosis and treatment of neuromusculoskeletal
(nerve, muscle and joint) disorders with an emphasis on the spine.
- What is a Chiropractic adjustment?
This involves using the hands or a small instrument to apply a sudden, controlled force to a
spine/joint to improve its motion and relieve pain, thereby increasing the body’s physical
function.
- Does it hurt?
For most patients, there is little to no pain during the adjustment. You will likely feel a click or
crack as the gas bubbles within the joints are released during the technique, and most people
feel a release of pressure afterwards.
- Do you only do spinal adjustments?
In addition to spinal adjustments, I also use various techniques, including sports massage, dry
needling, cupping and electrotherapy to relieve muscle spasms and knots.. As part of my
treatment, I give my patients advice to improve their posture and an at home exercise program,
so that they can be in control of their health.
