I’ve been thinking about a question:
What would “partial-woman” birth care look like?
Because as strange as that sounds, we actually know how to do it.
We can care brilliantly for a woman’s physical and medical needs during birth while overlooking the emotional and psychological experience of the woman those things are happening to.
We can keep her physically safe without asking whether she feels safe.
And I think we can — and should — expect more.
I’ve started calling the alternative Whole-Woman Birth Care (WWBC).
It begins with something incredibly simple:
A woman arrives at birth as a whole person. She deserves to be cared for that way.
This isn’t about promoting homebirth over hospital birth, natural birth over medical birth, waterbirth over epidurals, or any other particular way of giving birth.
Birth is unpredictable. Sometimes plans have to change.
But even when they do, the woman is still there.
Her voice matters.
Her dignity matters.
Her emotional safety matters.
Her need to understand what is happening matters.
And I think the consequences of getting this right reach much further than birth itself.
Support mothers well, and we strengthen families. Give children stronger foundations, and we influence the generation that comes next.
The birth doesn’t have to look a certain way. The care does.
