At Sheba, our cancer teams combine patient care, research, and innovation to continue advancing cancer care.

Last month, this work was highlighted on a global stage at the European Hematology Association (EHA) Congress in Stockholm, Sweden, a leading professional congress focused on the latest advancements in hematology.

There, Prof. Ben Boursi from Sheba’s Gastrointestinal Cancer Unit at the Jusidman Cancer Center was invited to present Sheba’s research on the microbiome and cancer treatment.

Did you know that 98% of each medication dose given for brain diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or glioblastoma never reaches the brain?

The reason is what doctors call “the blood-brain barrier”: a layer of tightly packed cells that lines the brain's blood vessels. It protects the brain from harmful substances, but it cannot distinguish between a threat and a treatment. It blocks both.

Prof. Yael Mardor, an expert in magnetic resonance imaging and drug delivery to the brain, shared how she and her team at Sheba Medical Center developed a non-invasive technology that opens the blood-brain barrier, temporarily and safely, allowing medication to finally reach the brain.

Sometimes, progress is measured in grams, breaths, and quiet moments of hope.

For twin sisters Hila and Avital, born prematurely at just 27 weeks, progress was measured in just that. They arrived at Sheba Medical Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) weighing barely one kilogram – with Avital weighing only 800 grams – too small to breathe, feed, or regulate their body temperature on their own.

In the NICU, the Sheba medical team monitored every parameter, every breath, every gram gained, and every change in vital signs. The parents spent long days at the bedside, immersed in a new world of monitors and medical terms, while the dedicated staff guided them through each step with expertise and compassion.

As the girls slowly grew stronger, hope followed each small improvement. When Hila grew strong enough to go home, Avital remained in the NICU, facing serious complications that required highly complex surgery. The NICU team fought for her relentlessly, never giving up for a moment.

For months, the family divided their time between home and hospital. Throughout their journey, the parents showed remarkable strength and resilience, supported by a NICU team that remained closely attentive, guiding Avital’s care with dedication and compassion.

After months of uncertainty and perseverance, Avital was able to join her sister, and the family was finally home together, beginning the life they had been waiting for. đź’™

100 lung transplants. 100 stories of hope.

Five years ago, Sheba established its Lung Transplant Unit to care for patients facing life-threatening lung disease.

Since then, a dedicated multidisciplinary team has come together to perform lung transplants for patients with complex and critical cases, including individuals who were once not considered candidates for transplantation.

This year, the unit completed its 100th lung transplant, marking an important milestone for the team and for the patients and families they support every day.
