Chemotherapy no longer works. What now?
This is one of the most common questions we hear from patients and their families. The answer is rarely straightforward because every case is different.
Chemotherapy remains one of the most important cancer treatments and can slow tumor growth or lead to remission. However, it also has limitations.
β Not all cancers respond to chemotherapy.
β Cancer cells may become resistant to treatment over time.
β Cancer stem cells may survive and contribute to recurrence.
β Treatment-related toxicity may require dose reduction or interruption.
In such situations, immunotherapy may become an important treatment option.
Immunotherapy helps the immune system recognize and destroy cancer cells. It may be particularly effective at the stage of minimal residual disease, during remission, and when chemotherapy cannot be continued because of toxicity.
In patients with larger tumors, immunotherapy may help slow disease progression and, in some cases, contribute to tumor shrinkage.
Every patient's response to treatment is different, which is why a personalized approach is essential.
