Always tired? The answer isn’t always “more energy.”

In my last post, I talked about something I see often in clinic: two people can both say “I’m exhausted” — and in Chinese medicine, they may have completely different patterns behind that fatigue.

One of those patterns is Spleen Qi deficiency.

When I see fatigue together with things like low appetite, feeling tired after eating, digestive weakness, loose stools, brain fog, or weakness in the limbs, I may consider whether Spleen and Stomach Qi need support.

Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang is a traditional Chinese herbal formula associated with this pattern. Its classical combination includes herbs such as Huang Qi (Astragalus), Ren Shen (Ginseng), Bai Zhu, Dang Gui, Chen Pi, Chai Hu, Sheng Ma and Zhi Gan Cao.

Traditionally, the formula is used to tonify Qi, support digestive function and address weakness associated with Qi deficiency.

I treat the pattern I see in the person in front of me.

Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang can be a beautiful formula when it matches that pattern. When it doesn’t, another approach may be more appropriate.

Your fatigue is giving us information. The first step is learning how to listen to it.

“I’m tired all the time.”

I hear this often in my practice.
But in Traditional Eastern Medicine, fatigue isn’t one diagnosis — and it doesn’t always have the same root.

One person may feel heavy and sluggish.
Another feels exhausted after eating.
Someone else is tired but restless, wakes at night, or feels depleted after their period.

These details matter.

In TCM, we look at the pattern behind the symptom. Fatigue may be described through patterns such as Qi deficiency, Blood deficiency, Yin deficiency, or Dampness — but these terms are part of a traditional diagnostic framework, not the same as a Western medical diagnosis.

That’s why I don’t believe in treating a symptom in isolation.

I listen to how you sleep, digest, breathe, recover, feel temperature, experience your cycle, and how your energy changes throughout the day. Then we begin to understand the larger picture and create an individualized treatment plan.

Your fatigue is information.
The question is: what is your body trying to tell us?

Have you ever noticed that when you're stressed, you just can't seem to take a full breath?

This is one of my favorite acupuncture points for that. It's called LU7, and you'll find it just above the wrist, on the thumb side of the forearm.

In Traditional Eastern Medicine, we use this point to help open the Lung channel, encourage deeper breathing, release tension around the chest, and help the body settle.

So when a patient tells me, "I feel like I can't get a satisfying breath," this is often one of the points I include in their treatment. Of course, it's never just about one point—we always treat the whole person.

Why Does Summer Make My Cycle Feel Different?

Have you ever noticed that your menstrual cycle feels a little different during the hottest months of the year?

Some women find they feel more irritable, experience restless sleep, notice increased fatigue, or feel more emotionally sensitive before their period. Others may experience changes in menstrual flow or a greater sense of heat in the body.

In Traditional Eastern Medicine, summer is associated with Heat. When the weather is especially hot, this external heat can influence how the body feels and functions—particularly if you're already feeling depleted or under stress.

Supporting yourself during this season doesn't have to be complicated.

A few gentle ways to care for your body:
• Stay well hydrated throughout the day.
• Choose fresh, seasonal foods with a high water content.
• Prioritize restful sleep whenever possible.
• Avoid overexertion during the hottest hours of the day.
• Make time for moments of rest and relaxation.

Every woman's cycle is unique.

In Traditional Eastern Medicine, we don't treat PMS as a single condition. We look at your individual pattern, your overall health, and how your body responds to each season.

Acupuncture and herbal medicine may help support balance throughout your cycle as part of a personalized treatment plan.

July is the month to protect your body's fluids.

July in Israel brings long, sunny days, dry air, and intense heat. While we often think about drinking more water, Traditional Eastern Medicine reminds us that summer heat can gradually deplete the body's nourishing fluids.

These fluids help keep the body balanced, support healthy circulation, and nourish the skin and tissues. When they become depleted, you may notice increased thirst, dry skin, restless sleep, fatigue, or a feeling of being emotionally "overheated."

One of the best ways to care for yourself this season is to support your body before it begins asking for help.

This July, try to:
• Sip water regularly throughout the day.
• Choose seasonal foods with a high water content, such as cucumber, watermelon, zucchini, and leafy greens.
• Avoid spending long periods in the strongest midday sun whenever possible.
• Slow down in the evening and allow your body to cool before sleep.

July isn't about doing more. It's about protecting what nourishes you.

LU7: When Your Breath Needs More Space

Have you ever noticed that when you're under stress, your breath becomes shorter?

Not because you're trying to breathe that way—but because your body is protecting itself.

In Traditional Eastern Medicine, the Lung system is much more than the physical lungs. It is connected to our breath, our protective energy, and our ability to let go—both physically and emotionally.

One of the points I often use in clinic is LU7 (Lieque).

Traditionally, LU7 is used to help:
• Open and regulate the Lung channel
• Support deeper, more comfortable breathing
• Ease tension in the chest and upper back
• Promote the smooth flow of Lung Qi
• Calm the body when breathing feels restricted

When someone tells me,
"I feel like I can't take a full breath,"
or
"My chest feels tight all the time,"

LU7 is often one of the points I consider as part of their individual treatment.

A single acupuncture point is never a magic solution. Every treatment is tailored to the whole person, not just one symptom.

But sometimes, supporting the breath is the first step toward helping the entire nervous system feel safe enough to soften.

If you've been experiencing shallow breathing, chest tightness, or the feeling that your body never truly relaxes, I'd be happy to help you explore what may be contributing to those symptoms.

There are times when your body feels exhausted… but your mind simply won't slow down.

In Traditional Eastern Medicine, this isn't simply viewed as insomnia.
Often, it's a sign that the Heart and Liver need nourishment and the Shen (spirit) has lost its quiet place to rest.

One of the formulas I may recommend in these situations is Suan Zao Plus, a modern herbal preparation based on a classical Traditional Eastern Medicine formula.

Traditionally, it is used to gently:
• Nourish the Heart and calm the Shen
• Support restful, uninterrupted sleep
• Ease emotional tension and overthinking
• Help the body shift from constant alertness into a more settled state

I only recommend herbal formulas after a personal consultation to make sure they match your individual pattern and any medications you may be taking.

If you'd like to learn whether this formula may be appropriate for you, feel free to send me a WhatsApp message or DM.

With warmth,
Juyon Kim

How can you create calmness and focus?

In Traditional Eastern Medicine, calmness isn't something we force. It begins when we create the conditions for the body and mind to settle.

This video is a short excerpt from one of my live online breathing practices, where I guide simple breathing techniques to help regulate the nervous system and gently restore a sense of balance.

You don't need any special experience or extra time. Just a few quiet minutes to notice your breath, soften your body, and allow your attention to return to the present moment.

If this practice helps you feel even a little more centered, save it and come back whenever you need a gentle reset.
