The patient wanted to avoid enucleation, so I designed a custom ultra-thin prosthetic shell to fit over the existing eye. The shell was customized according to the available space and ocular anatomy, with a central thickness of approximately 1.0 mm, gradually reducing to 0.50 mm at the edges.
The focus was on achieving the right balance between thinness, comfort, eyelid interaction, contour, centration and cosmetic appearance.
And if you look closely at the background image on the slit lamp, you can see the patient's eye and the anatomical challenge we were working with.
For me, this is what makes ocular prosthetics so interesting — sometimes the best solution is not a standard prosthesis, but a solution designed around the patient's anatomy.
