Ask for Help Early—Breastfeeding Support Matters

Breastfeeding challenges should not be dismissed with statements such as:

“Just keep trying.”
“Every mother naturally knows how.”
“Crying means your milk is insufficient.”

Breastfeeding is a learned process for both mother and baby. Timely assessment and skilled counselling can help families understand positioning, attachment, feeding frequency, milk transfer, expression, weight monitoring and common breastfeeding difficulties. The 2026 campaign highlights skilled infant and young-child-feeding counselling as one of the proven approaches worth strengthening.

Seek professional assessment when:

• The baby cannot attach or repeatedly slips off
• Feeding remains painful
• Ni***es are cracked, bleeding or severely sore
• The baby is unusually sleepy or difficult to wake for feeds
• Feeding has suddenly reduced
• Urine output appears inadequate
• Weight gain is poor or weight loss is concerning
• The mother has breast redness, swelling, fever or severe pain
• Parents feel overwhelmed or uncertain about feeding

Early help can protect the baby’s nutrition while preserving the mother’s comfort and confidence.

As World Breastfeeding Week ends, our commitment must continue throughout the year:

Protect breastfeeding. Support mothers. Strengthen what works.

For breastfeeding concerns, newborn feeding assessment, growth monitoring or premature-baby feeding guidance, consult our pediatric and neonatal team.

Returning to Work Should Not End Breastfeeding

Many mothers wish to continue breastfeeding after returning to work. With preparation and workplace support, continued breastfeeding may be possible.

A practical return-to-work plan may include:

• Learning hand expression or safe pump use
• Practising milk expression before returning to work
• Planning clean containers for expressed milk
• Discussing feeding arrangements with the caregiver
• Directly breastfeeding before and after work whenever possible
• Requesting appropriate breaks and a private place for expressing milk
• Following safe, locally appropriate milk-storage guidance

Expressing milk during working hours and directly breastfeeding whenever possible can help mothers continue milk production. Supportive workplace arrangements may include breastfeeding breaks, private expression spaces and suitable storage facilities.

Every employer can strengthen what works by treating breastfeeding support as a health, dignity and workplace-wellbeing priority.

Safety note:
Storage recommendations can vary according to temperature, equipment and local clinical guidance. Parents should receive individualized instructions before storing and using expressed milk.

Breastfeeding Is Not a Mother-Only Responsibility

A breastfeeding mother needs more than advice—she needs practical support.

Partners and family members can strengthen breastfeeding by:

• Sharing household responsibilities
• Helping with diapering, burping and settling the baby
• Ensuring that the mother gets meals, fluids and rest
• Limiting unnecessary visitors during the early days
• Protecting the mother from myths, criticism and pressure
• Accompanying her for medical or breastfeeding consultations
• Watching for emotional distress and encouraging timely help

Family support gives mothers more time and confidence to feed and care for their babies. UNICEF also encourages family members to assist with household work and help create an environment that protects breastfeeding.

Instead of asking, “Is your milk sufficient?” ask:

“How can I support you today?”

That single change can reduce pressure and strengthen the mother’s breastfeeding journey.

Tag a father, grandparent or family member who supports breastfeeding mothers.

For the First Six Months, Breast Milk Is Enough for Most Babies

For most healthy infants, exclusive breastfeeding means giving only breast milk during the first six months—not water, honey, ghutti, animal milk, juice or other foods.

WHO and UNICEF recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months because breast milk provides the food and water a young infant needs during this period. Prescribed medicines, vitamins, minerals or oral rehydration solution may be given when medically indicated.

Common myth:
“My baby needs water during hot weather.”

Fact:
A healthy, exclusively breastfed baby generally does not need additional water during the first six months. Feeding responsively and frequently helps meet the baby’s needs.

Mothers should not be blamed or shamed when breastfeeding is difficult. Medical conditions, prematurity, maternal illness, low milk transfer and other challenges require individualized assessment and compassionate support.

Before introducing formula, water or any additional feed to a young infant, discuss your baby’s feeding, weight and medical needs with a pediatrician or neonatologist.

Notice:
Mother’s milk is best for infants. Consult a pediatrician, neonatologist or qualified lactation professional when feeding support is needed.

Comfortable Feeding Begins with a Good Latch

Breastfeeding should not remain persistently painful.

Temporary tenderness may occur during the early days, but severe pain, cracked ni***es, clicking sounds, repeated slipping from the breast or very long ineffective feeds may indicate difficulty with positioning or attachment.

Signs of supportive positioning:

• Baby’s head and body remain in one line
• Baby is held close to the mother
• Baby’s whole body is adequately supported
• Baby approaches the breast with the nose near the ni**le

Possible signs of a good latch:

• Baby’s mouth is wide open
• Lower lip is turned outward
• Chin touches or nearly touches the breast
• Feeding becomes comfortable after attachment
• Slow, deep sucking with pauses can be seen or heard

Correct positioning and attachment can improve milk transfer and make feeding more comfortable.

Do not silently tolerate persistent pain. Early assessment can prevent worsening ni**le injury, ineffective milk transfer and unnecessary anxiety.

Contact our newborn-care team if breastfeeding is painful, your baby repeatedly loses the latch or feeding does not appear effective.

The First Hour Can Make a Difference

The first hour after birth is often called the golden hour—an important opportunity for skin-to-skin contact and early initiation of breastfeeding.

Whenever the health of the mother and baby permits:

• Place the baby skin-to-skin with the mother
• Keep mother and baby together
• Allow the baby time to find and attach to the breast
• Avoid unnecessary prelacteal feeds
• Ask for help when positioning or attachment is difficult

Early skin-to-skin contact can support breastfeeding initiation, newborn warmth, bonding and the establishment of breastfeeding.

Every delivery team and family can help strengthen what works by protecting uninterrupted mother–baby contact and offering calm, skilled assistance rather than pressure.

Some premature, sick or medically unstable babies may need an individualized feeding plan. Expressed breast milk may be considered under professional guidance when direct breastfeeding is temporarily difficult.

Speak with your pediatrician or neonatologist before delivery and prepare an early breastfeeding plan for your newborn.
