Tattoos have always been a part of the Indian culture. The last few years have seen an explosion of
tattoos. It is estimated that more than 50% of individuals who have a tattoo, later regret having it
done and want it removed. With advances in medical technology, laser therapy has become the gold
standard for the removal of tattoos.
Tattoos can be removed by
• Laser therapy
• Dermabrasion
• Excision
• Skin grafting
How does the laser work to reduce tattoos?
Today, lasers are the most common method of tattoo removal. They work by targeting the ink with
pulses of highly concentrated light that break the ink into tiny fragments, which are then cleared
away the immune system. Around 1-10 treatments may be required, spaced 4-8 weeks apart.The
more treatments you have, the more the laser can pe*****te to destroy the ink. Different laser’s
maybe be required to target different colours in the tattoo.
What should I expect during and after Laser Tattoo Removal?
An anaesthetic cream is applied prior to the procedure which maybe a bit uncomfortable. Later the
treatment area may be swollen, red and tender. Blisters may form. Do not pick at the skin, let it
heal naturally. It will crust up and eventually fall off. In the months ahead your body will dispose
of the cracked ink by its normal waste disposal protocol.
When will I be able to see the results?
You will notice some gradual fading over the course of anywhere from a few weeks to 8 months
as it takes the body time to dispose of the broken ink particles.
Will it leave a permanent scar?
While the risk of scarring is relatively small there is always a risk. If you did not suffer any
complications when the tattoo was originally applied, do not suffer keloids and the treated area is
cared for properly then the risk of scarring should be minimal.
How do other tattoo removal modalities work?
These other methods include dermabrasion, which would actually “sand” away the top layer of skin
through abrasive friction. Another method is excision, where the tattoo would be cut away and the
skin sewn back together. Skin grafting involves removing the tattoo bearing skin and replacing it
with skin taken from another area of the body.
Cover-up - An Alternative to Removal
A cover-up is simply having an old tattoo covered up with a new tattoo. Many tattoo artists are
becoming quite skilled in doing cover-up jobs, and can help you come up with a design that you
will be much happier to live with.
