Why WHO Reduced the Zinc Dose in Diarrhea (2024)
The World Health Organization (WHO) has updated its recommendation for zinc use in childhood diarrhea. The zinc dose has been reduced mainly for these reasons:
• Less vomiting: Higher zinc doses were often linked with vomiting in children.
• Same effectiveness: Studies show that a lower dose works just as well in reducing the duration and severity of diarrhea.
• Better tolerance: Children tolerate the lower dose better, with fewer side effects.
• Easier program implementation: A lower dose is simpler to use in community and public health programs.
New Recommendation:
Give zinc 5 mg once daily for 10–14 days in children up to 10 years of age.
