They have so much to say. They just can't get it out when it matters most.
It started somewhere specific.
The first time they said what they felt during a fight - something went wrong. Maybe the other person shut down completely.
Maybe the argument got so much worse that they spent days recovering from it.
Maybe they showed how much they were hurting and it was used against them.
However it happened, they learned one thing: saying what they felt made everything worse.
So they stopped.
The rule they wrote was this: if I stay quiet, I keep things from falling apart.
And it worked. In that room, with those people, staying silent genuinely kept things from escalating.
Nobody told them that room would one day be behind them.
Nobody told them the rule could stop.
So now in every argument - the words are there.
They feel them.
They know exactly what they want to say. And something shuts before any of it comes out. It's not a choice. It happens before they've even decided anything.
You think they don't care enough to talk.
They think staying quiet is the only way to protect what you have.
That's not stonewalling.
That's someone who learned very early that their words caused damage -still believing that in every argument they've had since.
If the person you love shuts down exactly when you need them to speak -
Everything I write here is about
where that silence actually came from.
