🍊 Why does Vitamin C help your body absorb more iron? 🩸

Iron from plant-based foods is mostly present as non-heme iron, which isn’t absorbed very efficiently by our gut.

Here’s where Vitamin C comes in 👇

🔬 Step 1 - Vitamin C changes iron’s form
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) helps convert Fe³⁺ (ferric iron) into Fe²⁺ (ferrous iron) - a form that is more readily absorbed by intestinal cells.

🧪 Step 2 - It keeps iron soluble
Vitamin C helps keep iron in a soluble form in the acidic environment of the upper intestine, making it easier for the gut to take it up.

🚪 Step 3 - Better intestinal uptake
The more soluble Fe²⁺ can be transported into intestinal cells through DMT1 (divalent metal transporter 1).

🛡️ Step 4 - It counters iron absorption inhibitors
Vitamin C can also reduce the inhibitory effects of compounds such as phytates and polyphenols, which can bind iron and decrease its absorption.

🍋 Simple takeaway:
Pairing iron-rich plant foods with Vitamin C-rich foods can improve non-heme iron absorption.

🥗 Try combinations like: • Dal + lemon • Chana + amla • Spinach + lemon • Beans + tomatoes • Iron-fortified foods + citrus fruits

Iron is what your body needs. Vitamin C can help your body USE more of it.

Sometimes, a patient doesn’t need another lecture.
They just need someone to believe they can come back.

Today, I sat across from someone struggling with drug abuse.

He knows he has lost control.
He knows the road ahead won’t be easy.
But he also said something that matters more than anything:

“I want to come back.”

And that is where recovery can begin.

I cannot promise that I can change his life overnight.
I cannot promise that the journey will be easy.

But I can promise this - I will listen without judgment. I will support him medically within my abilities. And I will help him take the next right step.

Because behind every addiction is a person.
A family.
A story.
And sometimes, a person who is desperately trying to find their way back.

Recovery is possible. Asking for help is not weakness.
Sometimes, it is the strongest thing you can do. ❤️

📱 Your morning starts BEFORE your phone does.

The first thing you give your brain in the morning matters.
📲 Notifications → comparison → information overload → anxiety & distraction

Instead, give your brain a chance to wake up naturally.
🏃‍♂️ Go for a run
🧘 Meditate
🏋️ Work out
📖 Read
💧 Hydrate
☀️ Step outside
Don’t let your phone decide how you feel for the rest of the day.
Try a 30–60 minute phone-free morning tomorrow and notice the difference.
Choose your first hour. It defines your day.

Did you know happiness can spread like a virus? 🦠
A 20-year study tracking over 5,000 people (Framingham Heart Study, BMJ 2008) found something wild: your happiness isn't just yours.
→ Your friend's happiness increases your chance of being happy by 15%
→ Your friend's friend's happiness increases it by 10%
→ Even a stranger 3 degrees away can move the needle by 6%
As a physician, this is one of my favorite studies - because it proves mental health isn't just individual biology. It's environment. It's community. It's who you spend time with.
Your social circle is a public health intervention. Choose it like one. 🧠

It started with a headache.
A 30-year-old man began taking paracetamol (PCM) because he wanted the headache and feverish feeling to go away.

One tablet didn't seem enough. So he kept taking it.500 mg… then another dose… and another. He eventually took paracetamol around 5–8 times a day for 5 days. He wasn't trying to overdose. He wasn't trying to harm himself. He was simply trying to get through the day.

Then something changed.

He developed severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and eventually jaundice.
His liver enzymes were extremely high:
ALT: 1,631 U/L
AST: 800 U/L

Doctors suspected drug-induced liver injury and started treatment with N-acetylcysteine (NAC). But the case had another important twist: he also tested positive for hepatitis B. That meant doctors couldn't simply blame everything on paracetamol—they had to investigate the real cause carefully.

So what does this teach us?
Paracetamol is not a "bad" medicine.

It is one of the most commonly used painkillers in the world and, when used appropriately, is generally safe. The problem begins when we start treating it like a harmless candy. Your liver normally processes paracetamol through safe metabolic pathways. But a small amount is converted into a toxic substance called NAPQI.

Normally, your liver neutralizes NAPQI using glutathione.

But with excessive or repeated exposure, the toxic metabolite can accumulate and glutathione can become depleted.

That can lead to:
NAPQI ↑ → glutathione ↓ → liver-cell injury → potentially severe liver damage

And here's the part most people don't think about:
You may also be getting paracetamol from other combination medicines for cold, flu, pain or headaches.

So you can unknowingly take multiple products containing the same drug.

The message isn't "never take PCM."
The message is:Don't make repeated painkiller use your solution to a recurring headache, body ache or fatigue

Problems that keeps coming back may have an underlying cause that needs to be identified.

And before taking repeated doses of any medicine, especially if you're already taking other medications, ask a doctor or pharmacist and check the ingredients.
