As behaviour therapists, we hear this ALL THE TIME. And here’s the thing parents need to know: your child behaving differently with you doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong.
Children often feel safest with their parents. That sense of safety can mean they are more comfortable expressing their frustration, emotions, resistance, and big behaviours with you.
A therapist is also a different person, in a different environment, with different expectations and routines. Your child may be more motivated to follow instructions during a therapy session because the setting is structured and the expectations are clear.
At home, your child may be tired, hungry, overstimulated, seeking connection, or simply testing boundaries with the person they trust the most.
So instead of thinking, “Why does my child listen to everyone except me?”, try asking:
✨ What is my child communicating through this behaviour?
✨ What happens right before the behaviour?
✨ Is my child tired, overwhelmed, or seeking connection?
✨ Are my expectations appropriate for their age and abilities?
✨ How can I respond consistently while still being supportive?
Remember, your child’s behaviour is communication. Understanding the why behind it is the first step towards meaningful change.
