Yes, it's normal for knees to make noises, especially when you squat or sit down. This is called crepitus, and it's usually harmless. Crepitus occurs when air bubbles in the soft tissues around the knee burst when you bend the joint.
However, you should see a doctor if your knee popping or crunching is accompanied by pain, swelling, or effusion. These could be signs of a more serious problem, such as:
