The mystery of the "Missing Number Plate" ๐Ÿ•ตโ€โ™€๏ธ...

Yesterday when I reached hospital, the guard pointed out that my car number plate was missing which sent me into a panic. I went back on the same 3km route but didn't find it. But I found a lady cleaning roads and asked her. She told she had seen 2 of them but threw them in the empty land 500metres away as she didn't know where to dispose them. I took her to that site but couldn't make out the number on the plates as they were partly hidden. The wall was almost 5 feet high with three steps on our side to climb up but none on the other side. I could see large snails ๐ŸŒ moving around dense foliage but I still wanted to somehow check those plates so I stopped a man who was passing by that area to help me if he could. He was a local well versed with climbing. He retrieved the number plates but alas none of them were mine. Disappointed, I went back to work. Called my car service centre and asked him what to do. He told me to lodge police complaint and order another one. And then as fate would have it, came emergencies from which I got free only by 10pm.

Exhausted after a long day, I fell off to sleep but as my adventurous spirit demanded, I needed to ๐Ÿ”Ž the matter and it being a Sunday I was determined to see if I could find it. Woke up earlier than usual and walked the entire stretch of nearly 4km that I had taken the day before including the place where due to heavy rain I couldn't see the bump ahead and the car had kind of rattled. Went to each of the 6 guards and asked each of them if they had seen the plate but to no avail ๐Ÿ˜“.

I wanted to give up but a tiny voice inside whispered, "You'll find it!" So again went for hunt when the guards on duty had changed. None of the 5 could help but as I was returning back with all hope lost, I saw the patrolling guard. I asked him and he said, "Yes ma'am! I saw one yesterday. Don't remember the number but you can check!"

Hurrah! I found it, in Nancy Drew style ๐Ÿ˜Ž ๐Ÿ•ตโ€โ™€๏ธ

Plastic Surgery and sun protection!

As plastic surgeons, we recommend regular sun protection to all our patients to prevent premature skin ageing.

The most important tool to achieve that is a good sunscreen of SPF >30+ used judiciously throughout the year, even on cloudy days. It should be applied at least half an hour before stepping into sun and repeated every 2-4hours.

That supplemented with use of umbrellas ๐ŸŒ‚ and/or wide brimmed hats ๐Ÿ‘’ , can prevent premature skin ageing and keep skin healthier for longer time.

Here, in this candid picture taken by my neurosurgeon friend of me using my apron to cover my face and arms is a makeshift arrangement as I had forgotten my umbrella ๐ŸŒ‚ at home and the way to cafeteria was sunny and I'm not used to walking in sun without umbrellas even when I have applied sunscreen properly! Well, did the apron help? I believe, yes because white deflects light and it covered me so I guess it provided some added protection and was better than not using nothing!

And I thought of using this candid picture taken for fun to spread awareness about significance of sun exposure related damage to skin and also why use of sunscreen and barriers like umbrellas and hats can go a long way in keeping one's skin youthful.

Operating at the head end and the foot end, one after the other...

One of the most attractive thing about is it's scope in terms of the variety of conditions that we get to treat starting from head to toe...

And today was a day where we operated literally from head to toe ๐Ÿ˜…. First case was a lady with mandible fracture and second one a child of a near total little toe amputation.

Weekend vibes!

I have some amazing set of students who besides surgery are talented at many more things!

When Bhuvan, my second year resident got hurt last week, he requested me to stitch him up and while leaving he said, "Ma'am when I come next week for suture removal, I'll bake a cake ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿณ๐ŸŽ‚and bring for you!" And today as he came to get his sutures removed, he did keep his words ๐Ÿ˜Š and came up to my OPD with a lovely chocolate cake๐ŸŽ‚๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿ˜‹ baked to perfection, just the way I like it...as less sugar as possible...

I'm proud of my students and wish them all the best in their professional and personal lives!! And with Bhuvan's baking skills, I have already predicted to him that he is going to be good partner and a good father, if he keeps up his baking and cooking skills ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜!

Contrary to what happens in most Indian households where most girls ๐Ÿ‘ญ๐Ÿ‘ญ even if highly qualified are taught cooking; most boys ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿคฆmiss on getting training in this basic life skill๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ, sadly for themselves and their future families...

Growing up in a family where my granddad and dad knew how to cook and cooked well for us, I remember them teaching all of us that cooking is not just a women's job. Anybody who eats must know how to cook ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜!!

And now seeing a lot of my boys knowing cooking as well, I'm hopeful that women of next generation are going to have less tough times than women of our generation, if they choose to marry!!!

Proud of my students!

When Shweta, my 4 years junior at medical school messaged me at 4pm yesterday, "Di, I'm coming to Bangalore for today evening and tomorrow for work. Let me know your location, I would want to come and meet you! I know it's a very very short notice as my meeting came last minute but I still wanted to try my luck to check your availability and catch up for a while!" , there was no way I could have turned down her request.

As her supersenior, it was lovely to see her grow beautifully into the professional that she is now working for Public health after completing her MD in Pediatrics. I also admired her silver mane which to me, especially when sported by women shows how much confident they have become in their skin and how strong they have become to not give a damn to the superficial judgements of the society! That to me is freedom and a superpower!

She recollected the hostel days and how I was one of the very few seniors who was not interested in ragging as I felt it was a waste of my time and quite a sadistic thing to do!

While we both shared our journeys post our graduation and postgraduation, what made us giggle the most was going to college with hair dripping with oil, briaded into 2 braids, putting different coloured ribbons in each braid๐Ÿซฃ and wearing absolutely mismatching salwar, kameez and dupatta as a part of our Ragging Dress code to the college๐Ÿซข!

And we both thanked our stars๐Ÿ˜… that there were no smartphones then๐Ÿ“ฑ and we have no pictures of looking outrageous ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜ during our ragging days!

Pleasant evening, pleasant rains, pleasant memories shared over a pleasant dinner of the lanes that we have left behind...Chhod aaye hum wo galiyaan..!!

Varsh*tha's gurudakshina and remembering my EST days...

To my pleasant surprise, Varsh*tha, my PG who completed her posting with me a couple of days ago got me some dark chocolate slabs ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿซ as gurudakshina ๐Ÿ˜‡โ˜บ๏ธ for me today!

Took me back to my EST(Emergency Surgical Team) days at AMU. After every procedure that we did independently we were supposed to be giving a dinner for the entire EST the same night. And the dinner would literally be a 7 course meal ordered from either of the top two restaurants of Aligarh at that time.

The goal of the dinner went much beyond teaching surgery. It aimed at instilling in us the pride of becoming independent step by step with each procedure that we did and to celebrate each small step we took ahead in our surgical journey with the entire team. It was half an hour that the entire team from SR to JR1 took to sit together and the ACMO was told to not disturb us for that half hour at any cost unless there was a real life threatening emergency. That half an hour was precious time of comradarie, discussions, teachings and a lot more and we all fondly remember those days well... And no one ever dared disturb the surgical team for that half an hour as everyone respected what we did for the rest 23.5hours on our duty!!!

The first EST party that I ever gave was for draining a breast abscess that finished in 10minutes flat... And wondered why the hell do we even need to have a party for draining a breast abscess...But now I realise that it was not a dinner for draining the breast abscess but to instil pride in the magnitude of change I would make to each of my patients' life in future as I would move ahead in my surgical journey! ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜„

And well Varsh*tha's gurudakshina was much appreciated, me being a fan of dark chocolates ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿซ๐Ÿซ!

Reputation....

Indrajit, my nursing assistant who has been assisting me for nearly 4 months now, during our morning surgery told me, "Ma'am if I or anyone in my family ever needs a Plastic Surgery intervention, I will only come to you to get it done."

Curious at his remark I smiled and asked him why. He said, "Ma'am you do surgeries so meticulously taking all time and if you are not happy you remove all sutures and redo it and you take complicated cases that many surgeons won't. After working with you for so many days now, I have full confidence that I'll be in safe hands if I come to you for my surgery, if need arises."

As he said this, I made my postgraduate Darshan understand that that is what he must strive to achieve as a surgeon. Not just his patients who wouldn't know much about his skills...but his assistants, colleagues and contemporaries must feel confident in him to conduct their surgeries well. And the only way to build reputation would be to work hard at studies, operating neatly giving consistenly good results and maintaining ethics and standards while operating.

And we reflected that how reputation takes years of toil to develop and there is no shortcut to achieve it.

Candid conversations...

One of the best part of being a teacher to young surgeons is that not just they but I get to learn a lot from them too!!!

Today while suturing one of my resident with two other residents in attendance, we were talking about some general things when they suddenly asked, "What kind of men do you like, ma'am?" The reason behind the question being that many of them are looking for life partners and they wanted to learn from my experiences.

I said, "Someone with high EQ and high IQ who is a kind, compassionate and generous with whom I could have deep conversations, remembers to get me flowers, writes me poetry & has the capacity to understand my poetry, can make us a meal, knows that he needs to make me walk on the side of pavement and opens the doors wherever we go consistenly even after years of knowing me coming genuinely from a place of love. He should have his own life goals and be supportive in mine and be secure enough to not be threatened by my growth. And of course, he should earn atleast as much as I do!

There were giggles and laughter and my students asked me, "Isn't this too much, ma'am!?" And I smiled and said, "No! This is the bare minimum!! When I can do all this for myself, he should be able to do this much atleast for us!"

The boys exclaimed, "Ma'am you belong to a different generation. Girls these days don't like flowers or poetry. They are just looking for someone to elevate their lifestyle! They don't care about the rest!" Girls had a different opinion. They felt that boys were bothered more about their style or beauty and if they cared too much, the boys stopped caring altogether. They also felt lack of effort and a sense of competition from many of the men they met.

I don't know the trend in this generation but I do advice my girls to keep up their standards by themselves until they meet the right man and my boys to see the standards of the woman they like as an opportunity to grow as a person and not as a reason to give up!
