Detachment is a complex topic at any stage of a relationship. There are so many myths around detaching ourselves from our relationships; many believe that any detachment is negative and selfish. Detachment does not mean not caring. It's taking care of yourself first and letting others take responsibility for their actions without trying to save or punish them.

When you set a boundary and detach yourself from codependency, you're simply inviting that person to an opportunity to heal. You can't heal somebody else. So, stop trying. It's wasted energy. A person will only heal if and when he/she is ready to do so. Especially in new relationships, where you are not quite sure about this person and are still figuring things out for yourself, some healthy detachment in these 5 ways will help you navigate the emotional and psychological intricacies of dating life.

As you venture back into the dating world, what are some necessary shifts that you'll be making? How will you make sure that you are able to explore fully without carrying the burden of getting hurt on your shoulders? Take a look at this list. Then make a list of your own and write down what you'd do instead. If you find yourself getting attached quickly and ready to heal this pattern, then I'd love to support you.

In Relational and Attachment Psychotherapy we can work on-

1. Breaking Premature Attachment

2. Heal Trauma

3. Heal Trauma Bonds

4. Healing The Core Wounds of Abandonment And Rejection.

Many of us unknowingly operate on a fear of abandonment with our loved ones. This can manifest as low self-esteem and people pleasing which makes expressing our needs and setting boundaries very difficult.

The closer we get to upsetting a partner, we find ourselves struggling even more. Setting boundaries in old relationships can be a nightmare for many. Nevertheless it can be an opportunity to practice building self-respect and sense of self-worth which is not rooted in a fear of abandonment.

So how can we set new boundaries in old relationships without draining ourselves in fear or hurting our partners feelings? Here are 3 tips to follow before you start such a conversation with your partner.

☑️Helping our partners understand the need for this change and what would it look like.

☑️Bridging the gap of knowledge by checking with your partner how do they feel about certain issues.

☑️Acknowledging the difficulty to process change that your partner may experience and checking in for their emotional availability before.

It’s natural to be emotionally unavailable when we have a lot going on or need personal space. But what about people who persistently avoid intimacy, delay important conversation, feel attacked and lack empathy?

We all have experienced situations where someone we care about couldn’t be there for us emotionally at some point. Maybe they seemed distant, unaffectionate, or uninterested. But, what about people who frequently seem this way? How can you recognize an emotionally unavailable person, in general?

Although everyone’s different and there are many reasons why someone may behave emotionally distant, there are a few signs of chronic emotional unavailability. Learning to recognize these may help you make decisions about your relationships and protect yourself if you feel invested in someone emotionally unavailable.

An emotionally unavailable person has persistent difficulty expressing or handling emotions, or getting emotionally close to other people. Discomfort feeling ones own emotions, sharing emotions with others, or being present and responsive to someone else’s emotions is emotional unavailability.

Emotionally unavailable people have discomfort with being vulnerable, which makes it almost impossible to engage with others in a way that has emotional intimacy and depth. An emotionally unavailable person tends to respond in a defensive way. Or, they might blame you or someone else for their problems. They find trusting others challenging.

Because they tend to “turn off” emotions and lack insight, people who are emotionally unavailable might also exhibit low empathy — the inability to understand or share someone else’s feelings.Attachment wounds,” such as a history of being abandoned, neglected, or ridiculed, may also lead to emotional unavailability. These wounds can develop in childhood or later in life.Staying emotionally distant serves a self-protective purpose in these cases.
