India has become one of the first countries to introduce Awiqli (insulin icodec), the world's first once-weekly basal insulin for adults with diabetes. Developed by Novo Nordisk, the treatment reduces insulin injections from 365 to just 52 a year while offering blood sugar control comparable to daily basal insulin. The weekly insulin pen starts at ₹2,611.

Patients starting insulin therapy generally need about 10 units a day. With Awiqli, the same weekly requirement of about 70 units is delivered through a single injection instead of seven daily doses.

The larger 2,100-unit 3 ml FlexTouch pen has been priced at Rs 7,833.

Union Health Ministry has notified the inclusion of the drug Pregabalin under Schedule H1 of the Drugs Rules to strengthen regulation and prevent misuse particularly among youth.

The decision has been taken in view of reports received from certain States regarding the misuse and abuse of Pregabalin. The drug, which is prescribed for the treatment of chronic pain, neuropathies and certain neurological conditions, has reportedly been misused for its sedative and dissociative effects.

The Ministry stated that recent seizures of illegally stocked and unauthorizedly sold Pregabalin have been reported from some parts of the country. The revised classification mandates that Pregabalin can be sold only against a valid prescription issued by a Registered Medical Practitioner.

We urgently need a clear SOP to prevent misuse of restricted prescription drugs.

One effective method could be QR-enabled prescription sheets for all doctors prescribing restricted medicines. Each prescription carries a unique QR code linked to a secure portal. After prescribing, the doctor uploads a photo or digital copy of the prescription. The medical shop scans the QR code and verifies authenticity before dispensing.

Two other strong alternatives can also work.

A centralized e-Prescription registry for restricted drugs, where prescriptions are generated only through an approved digital system. Pharmacies can dispense medicines only after matching the prescription ID with the registry, eliminating fake or reused prescriptions.

Another method is pharmacist-level OTP verification. When a restricted drug is billed, an OTP is sent to the prescribing doctor or the registered hospital system. Dispensing happens only after confirmation, creating real-time accountability.

A hybrid approach combining QR prescriptions, digital logs, and pharmacist verification would drastically reduce abuse, protect patients, and safeguard doctors from misuse of their prescriptions.
