You look fine. But your mind doesn’t switch off.

You are functioning - showing up, doing what needs to be done. But your mind is constantly running in the background.
Replaying.
Rehearsing.
Fantasising.
Reworking things that are already over.

This is not a lack of discipline.
It is not a mindset issue.
It is a system that has learned not to switch off.

The question is - why?

Learning to trust your body is not instant. It happens slowly.
In small moments -
when you pause,
notice,
and stay.
The body learns safety through experience, not force.
Go gently.

Most people go straight into emotion. We try to process, express, or understand what we feel.
But if the body is not prepared, this can quickly become overwhelming.

Emotional work activates the nervous system.
And if that activation exceeds our capacity, the system moves into survival - shutdown, avoidance, or reactivity.
This is why preparation matters.

Preparation is not avoidance.
It is capacity-building.

When the body is supported - through breath, grounding, and gentle release - it can stay present with emotion instead of getting flooded.

With preparation:
Emotion moves.
Without preparation:
Emotion overwhelms.

If you’ve ever felt worse after trying to “process” something, your body may not have been ready yet.

Go slower.

Build capacity first.

Save this before your next deep conversation.

The Arts for Mental Health Initiative (AMHI) website is now live!

artsformentalhealth.com Link in Bio.

This has been building quietly over years of work at the intersection of expressive arts, somatics, and mental health.

At its core is a simple idea:
Insight alone does not create change. The body must be included.

You’ll find:

• 1:1 therapy
• group programs and courses
• organisational and leadership offerings
• workshops and learning spaces

If you’ve been curious about this work, this is a good place to begin.
If this brings someone to mind, feel free to share it with them!

Understanding the Window of Tolerance

The "Window of Tolerance" is a concept from neuroscience and trauma studies that helps us understand how we cope with stress and emotions.

When we’re within our window, we feel calm, focused, and able to manage challenges. But stress or trauma can push us out of this window:

Into hyperarousal, where we feel anxious, overwhelmed, or reactive.

Or hypoarousal, where we feel numb, disconnected, or shut down.

Both responses are normal and are your body’s way of trying to protect you. However, they can make life feel overwhelming or disconnected.

The good news is that we can expand this window over time. Practices like mindfulness, creative expression, gentle movement, and seeking support can help regulate emotions and bring balance.

If you’ve ever felt like your emotions are “too much” or that you’ve shut down completely, know that you’re not alone. With patience and care, it’s possible to find steadiness and feel more at home in your body and mind. Let’s explore what works for you.

Excited to be part of !
In this workshop, we take on an embodied exploration of stress states through the polyvagal ladder, working through activation and release in the body and mind. Through the expressive arts, we experientially learn how we "do" stress and how we experience release, relaxation and rejuvenation.
