Counselling and Psychotherapy in India- Need for a parent body

Counselling and Psychotherapy in India- Need for a parent body Join the movement- to certify counselling and psychotherapy in India Hundreds of psychology students are passing out with questions about their future.

While the world is talking about neurosciences, spiritual quotient and Pre frontal cortex in Counseling and psychotherapy, in India we are still grappling with basic questions like does a counselor need to have a degree. We want to wake up and take this profession not only to standardization and certification but beyond to make it the best in the world! The amount of research that is happening in

India is of a high order, but not documented. We want to document our work for the world to see. We want to bring quality certified counseling closer to the masses. We have some of the most dedicated and certified counselors but do not have a complied data of them. We want to bring about a positive change, that has been long overdue. This herculean national drive is rapidly moving towards the goal of standardizing, certifying and bringing to the masses quality counseling and psychotherapy services. This is a bold initiative and issue that so few people talk about. I hope that you'll share this incredible journey with us - by supporting us in any which way you would like from the confines of your home and city. Emotionally healthier India -Oct 2011 – Present

Project description

The challenge
While choosing a counsellor or a therapist, it can be reassuring for people to know, that they work to certain standards of good practice as a professional, as people place a huge amount of trust in them.

However, there is no governing body in India which certifies the norms of practice based on approved standards. Lack of professionally trained and certified counsellors may make the client susceptible to harm, not be beneficial or simply be benign.

Proposed solution
We are in dire need of a professional, dedicated and an effective parent body for counselling and psychotherapy in India, to help make India emotionally healthier and provide and maintain the highest standards of practice in this field.

The mission
To bring certified counselling services closer to the public.
Enhance the quality of life, by promoting the development of professional counselors and advancing the counselling profession.

The aim
1) To see accreditation and recognition as an integral component of Quality, Assurance and Accountability.

2) Set the norms of practice, code of ethics and certify the basic quality standards of counsellors, training courses and supervisors, by evidence-informed practice.

3) Make the public more aware of the counselling profession and its benefits.

4) The “Find your counselor” drive will help people find competent practitioners based on an informed choice rather than speculation. This focus on standards and verification of qualifications will be a distinguishing factor.

5) To evolve procedures for dealing with malpractice, by providing a mechanism for investigating complaints and create a system of accountability.
