བོད་གངས་ཅན་གྱི་ལྗོངས་སུ་རིག་པའི་གནས་ཆེན་ལྔར་གྲགས་པའི་ཡ་གྱལ་གཞན་རྗེས་སུ་འཛིན་པའི་གསོ་བ་རིག་པ་དང་། བླང་དོར་རྣམ་འབྱེད་ཀྱི་རིག་པ་དཀར་ནག་རྩིས་གཉིས་ལ་ལོ་ངོ་བཞི་སྟོང་ལ་ཉེ་བའི་ལོ་རྒྱུས་ཀྱི་རྒྱུད་རིམ་ལྡན་ཞིང་། དེ་ནི་གདོད་མའི་བོད་ཀྱི་སྙན་རྒྱུད་གསོ་རིག་གི་ཤེས་བྱ་རྨང་གཞིར་བྱས་ཐོག་ལོ་རྒྱུས་ཀྱི་ཁུངས་བཙུན་ཞིང་ཐུན་མོང་མ་ཡིན་པའི་ལག་ལེན་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་རང་རིགས་སྐྱེ་བོ་ཡོངས་དང་། ཁྱིམ་མཚེས་མི་རིགས་བཅས་ལའང་ཞབས་འདེགས་བླ་མེད་ཞུས་པའི་ལོ་རྒྱུས་ལྡན། འདས་པའི་སྤྱི་ཚོགས་འཕོ་འགྱུར་དང་རིག་གནས་དར་སྤེལ་གྱི་བྱ་གཞག་ནང་མཉམ་མེད་ཤཱཀྱ་སེང་གེས་བསྟན་པའི་ཆོས་ཀྱི་ནང་དོན་ཕུན་སུམ་ཚོགས་པའི་ཟུར་རྒྱན་གྱིས་རབ་ཏུ་ཕྱུག་པའི་རིག་གཞུང་ཞིག་ཡིན།

Brief History of Tibetan Medical and Astro-College
Tibetan Medical Science and Tibetan Astro-Science are Cultural Sciences of Tibet and enjoy a long-standing history of over 4000 years. It posses an authentic history as it is based on the oral transmission of medical knowledge passed over from the primordial times and with its own exclusive treatment methods, it has been put into service of providing wellness for the Tibetan people and people belonging to our neighboring countries. Moreover, in the course of its evolution, it has been infused with the wisdoms from the pages of Buddhism and thus, it has been developed into one of the most well-decorated and rich cultural traditions of Tibet. To set into its lineage system: Yuthok Yonten Gonpo; the father of Tibetan Medicine began the teaching of Tibetan Medicinal text ‘Four Tantra’ and its auxiliary texts in Kongpo Menlung at 763 AD to an audience of over 300 students and thus formatted levels of education by introducing degree titles: Due-rava, Ka-chupa, Rab-jampa and Bum-rampa. The teaching and its lineage continued in the set environment and in 17th century, His Holiness the Great 5th Dalai Lama envisioned and founded ‘Chagpori Medical College’ and other learning centres of Tibetan Medicine and Tibetan Astro-Science and hence played a pivotal role in the preserving and flourishing of these two traditions. In 1916, His Holiness the Great 13th Dalai Lama established Lhasa Men-Tsee-Khang (Tibetan Medical and Astro-Institute) and it continued full-fledged till the invasion of Tibet and destruction of its race, culture and so forth by the Chinese Communist Government in 1959. In wake of this, His Holiness the Great 14th Dalai Lama and his retinues had to flee to India to safeguard Tibet’s identity including its unique culture and traditions. In the early days of exile in India, His Holiness established schools, monasteries and institutes to preserve and revive Tibetan Buddhism, culture, tradition and this center was part of the establishments carried in the early exile days. In 1962, with just one teacher and two students, Tibetan Medical and Astro-College was incepted with kind blessings of His Holiness and till date, 17 Medical batches totaling 311 Tibetan Medical practitioners and 8 Astro-Science batches totaling 60 Tibetan Astro-science practitioners have graduated and they are actively serving at the main institute and branch clinics to help patients set free from physical and mental sufferings. Moreover, at present there are 84 Medical students and 22 Astro-Science students studying at the college. The enrolment to Tibetan Medical and Astro-College is not exclusive to Tibetan students as anyone interested in the learning of these two traditions are welcome to study if they fulfill the mentioned criteria including the passing of entrance tests. Also for those who do not have good command over Tibetan language, short span courses in English are organized each year and our college also facilitates lecturers to our collaborated academic centres abroad. At Tibetan Medical and Astro-College, traditional methods of inculcating knowledge through memorization of root texts, introduction of medicinal herbs grown over Himalayan region and raw unprepared substances used in medicines, medicinal compounding techniques and so forth goes hand in hand with the adoption of the latest pedagogic methods of modern science and technology. Moreover, to further advance and widen the medical knowledge of students to complement in their understanding of Tibetan Medicine, Medical professors and doctors from Emory University’s School of Medicine, USA has been coming to our college to teach our students for two-weeks each summer on different bio-medical subjects like anatomy, diagnostic methods and so forth. Our medical students also get to visit Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College at Tanda for a weeklong program where they get to practically study the complete regional anatomy via dissections and so forth. Adding to this, we also have a modern science lecturer in our faculty teaching regularly with set syllabus. Tibetan Medicine and Tibetan Astro-Science enjoys deep bonding with Tibetan Buddhism and in particular, the six qualities of physicians mentioned in Tibetan Medical text is very much a subscription from Tibetan Buddhism. As knowledge and understanding of Tibetan Buddhism is very important, we have been inviting Tibetan Buddhist scholars at regular intervals to teach and educate our students. In particular, our college has been carrying Yuthok Nyingthik ritual practice introduced by the then chant master of Chagpori Medical College Venerable Dr. Tenzin Palchok la (late) on either of the 10th or 25th Lunar day of each month to prosper and flourish the practice of these two traditions. Similarly, efforts are made to have all our students blessed with Yuthok Nyingthik initiation by offering requests to Kyabje Khamtrul Rinpoche, Kyabje Ganor Rinpoche and so forth. In short, Tibetan Medical and Astro-Science College is an advanced learning center of Tibetan Medicine and Tibetan Astro-Science where traditional and modern teaching techniques are beautifully interwoven and it can be proudly said that the students studying at our college are the eligible graduates of Tibetan Schools in terms of both academic and moral aspects.
