Inaugural Neuro Muscular Summer School to Build Regional Expertise hosted at St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences
Bengaluru, July 2026: St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences hosted an inaugural Neuro Muscular Summer School (NMSS), a landmark initiative aimed at strengthening expertise and multidisciplinary care in neuromuscular disorders across India and neighbouring countries.
Inspired by the renowned International Summer School, Paris, which has trained neuromuscular specialists for over three decades, the seven-day programme brings together 55 neurologists—including 45 from India and 10 from Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Nepal, Laos, Vietnam, and Kenya.
Participants were selected through a rigorous application and interview process and represent mid- and senior-career clinicians committed to advancing neuromuscular care.
The NMSS is being held from 20–26 July 2026 at St. John's Research Institute and St. John's Medical College Hospital, Bengaluru, under the aegis of the Departments of Neurology and Paediatrics.
The programme features intensive lectures, case-based discussions, and 27 interactive workshops, led by 12 international experts and 82 national faculty, with participants representing 12 countries.
Distinguished international faculty include Prof. Andoni Urtizberea (Founder Director, Paris Summer School), Prof. Annemieke Aartsma-Rus(Leiden University Medical Center, Netherlands), and Prof. Joanne Ng (University College London, UK), among other leading experts in neuromuscular medicine and gene therapy.
To extend the impact of the Summer School, six one-day public symposia are being conducted alongside the programme, enabling a wider clinical audience to benefit from the expertise of internationally acclaimed faculty.
The inaugural NMSS marks a significant milestone for India, creating a sustainable platform for training, collaboration, and capacity building in neuromuscular medicine.
By fostering regional networks and multidisciplinary expertise, the programme aims to improve diagnosis, treatment, and long-term care for patients with neuromuscular disorders across South Asia and beyond.
