Why does early love feel like it takes over your brain — the constant thoughts, the restlessness, the pull to be near someone? A study out of Kyoto University offers a striking answer.

Researchers scanned the brains of 51 young men in the early stages of a romantic relationship. When they anticipated seeing their partner, the same circuits lit up that are involved in reward, craving and motivation — the very systems tied to addiction. In the brain's language, a new love is treated as a uniquely rewarding thing, which helps explain why infatuation can feel intense, obsessive, even consuming.

Two honest caveats. First, the researchers are clear: this does not mean love is a substance addiction. Second, the study looked only at young men in new heterosexual relationships, so it can't be stretched to everyone.

Why does this matter clinically? Because "love feels like a craving" is normal in early romance — but the same wiring is also why some relationships become genuinely hard to leave, even when they hurt. When the pull to a person overrides sleep, work, friendships or safety; when anxiety spikes at any distance; when someone stays in a relationship that harms them because being without it feels unbearable — that's where the neuroscience of attachment meets real distress.

That distress is workable. At Cadabams Hospitals, JP Nagar, our psychiatrists and therapists help people understand these patterns — anxious attachment, dependency, and relationships that have stopped being safe — and find steadier ground.

Early love feeling like an addiction is human. When it starts costing you the rest of your life, it's worth talking to someone.

There's a difference between loving someone and not being able to function without them. Worth knowing which is which.

Some numbers are hard to read, but they ask us to pay attention. India's official records show that suicides among married men have risen sharply — up around 82% between 2015 and 2024 — with the heaviest toll among men aged 30 to 45.

It's tempting to reduce this to a single cause; the reporting often points to marital disputes or affairs. But that's rarely the whole story. Behind most of these deaths is something quieter and more treatable: untreated distress, and a man who felt he couldn't ask for help.

Here's what we see clinically. Depression in men often doesn't look like sadness. It looks like anger, irritability, withdrawal, working all the time, drinking more, or going silent. Many men are raised to carry pressure alone — financial strain, a struggling marriage, a sense of failing as a provider — and to treat asking for help as weakness. It isn't. It's the opposite.

If a man in your life has pulled away, seems hopeless, is drinking more, or has said things like "everyone would be better off without me" — take it seriously, and stay close. You don't need the perfect words. "I've noticed you're not okay, and I'm not going anywhere" is enough to start.

Su***de is preventable. Distress is treatable. Reaching out — for yourself or someone you love — is not weakness; it is one of the strongest things a person can do.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please talk to someone. Cadabams Hospitals, JP Nagar — psychiatry, therapy and family support, for more than three decades.

Anhedonia — the clinical loss of pleasure — isn't one experience. Modern research separates it into two axes. Anticipatory vs consummatory. Social vs physical. Why this matters: different types respond to different treatments. Standard SSRIs may lift mood but leave anhedonia intact. Bupropion or behavioural activation may be more effective for anhedonic profiles. The diagnosis shapes the plan.

More than just a memory: The biology of trauma.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is often misunderstood as a purely emotional response. In reality, trauma leaves a physical imprint on the brain, altering how the body processes stress and safety.

When a traumatic event occurs, the brain’s ‘alarm system’ can become stuck in the ‘on’ position. This biological shift manifests in three key ways:

📍 Hyperarousal: The amygdala remains hyper-reactive, keeping the body in a constant state of fight-or-flight.
📍 Memory Fragmentation: The hippocampus, responsible for processing memories, may struggle to distinguish the past from the present.
📍 Emotional Regulation: The prefrontal cortex—the logical center—can become underactive, making it difficult to manage intense reactions.

Recognizing that these symptoms are biological markers, not character flaws, is the first step toward clinical recovery. At Cadabam’s Hospitals, we utilize evidence-based psychiatric interventions to help recalibrate the nervous system and restore cognitive balance.

Understanding the science is the pathway to healing.

Treating the brain, not just the behavior.

At Cadabam’s Hospitals, we view addiction through a clinical lens. It is not a moral failure or a lack of willpower; it is a chronic, relapsing medical condition that fundamentally alters the brain's reward system.

Understanding the Disease Model:

• Biological Triggers: Prolonged substance use changes neural pathways, making the 'drive' to use a physiological necessity rather than a choice.
• Beyond Behavior: While behavior is the visible symptom, the root cause lies in neurochemical imbalances that require medical intervention.
• Long-term Management: Like diabetes or hypertension, addiction requires a structured, clinical pathway for stabilization and long-term recovery.

Recovery begins when we stop judging the habit and start treating the pathology. Our medical teams provide the clinical authority needed to navigate the complexities of detoxification and neuro-rehabilitation.

Clarity starts with a clinical perspective.
