Speech depends on the brain coordinating many things at once. That includes:

👂 Hearing the sound
👀 Watching the face and mouth
👄 Feeling the jaw, lips and tongue move
🧠 Planning and organising the movement

That’s why speech is more than a language skill. It is also a sensory and movement skill.

Some children may know exactly what they want to say but still struggle to say it clearly, copy sounds, or use words consistently. Repeating the same word again and again may not always be enough.

As therapists, we can ask:

“Is this child’s nervous system ready to listen, organise, and respond?”

When we understand the sensory side of communication, we understand the child better.

A small touch on the skin can sometimes create a big response in the nervous system. We call this tactile over-responsivity.

Now imagine a similar response happening inside the mouth.

When oral sensory input is difficult to process, a child may find it harder to explore, manage, and navigate food safely for eating and swallowing.

This is where understanding the sensory-motor foundations of feeding becomes important.

Deep, predictable sensory input, when clinically appropriate, can support better processing and help the child respond to oral input more effectively.

At COSMI for Pediatric Feeding & Swallowing, we move beyond techniques and tools. We help clinicians understand the why behind a child’s feeding difficulty, so that clinical decisions become more precise, and effective.
