Common Causes of Back Pain
Muscle or Ligament Strain: A common cause, often from heavy lifting or sudden awkward movements.
Aging: Disc degeneration and arthritis become more common with age, increasing the risk of back pain.
Lifestyle Factors: Lack of exercise, excess weight, poor posture, and smoking can all contribute to back pain.
Structural Problems: Disk injuries (like herniated or bulging discs), spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), and facet joint damage can cause pain.
Medical Conditions: Arthritis, osteoporosis, infections, tumors, kidney issues, and certain inflammatory conditions (like ankylosing spondylitis) can also lead to back pain.
At-Home Treatments
For acute back pain, try these measures first:
Reduce Activity: For the first few days, reduce your physical activity to help relieve symptoms.
Apply Ice or Heat: Use ice for the first 48–72 hours, then switch to heat.
Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers: Take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or an NSAID like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) as directed.
Gentle Exercise: After initial rest, gradually reintroduce gentle exercises like walking, swimming, or yoga to strengthen back muscles and improve flexibility.
