Hernia occurs when an organ or part of organ squeezes through a weak spot in the containing muscle. The most common types form in the abdomen or groin. They do not heal by medical treatment and typically require surgery to repair.
Common Typesof hernia
1.Inguinal: Occurs in the groin; the most common type and primarily affects males.
2.Umbilical: A bulge around the belly button.
3.Incisional: Occurs at the site of a past abdominal surgery.
4. Hiatus: At Gastro-esphageal junction in diaphragm.
5.Femoral: Appears in the upper thigh, just below the groin. More common in women.
6. Lumbar, Spegalian, obturator and lateral wall hernia are rare.
Symptoms:
Visible or palpable bulge that often becomes more prominent when you cough, stand up, or strain, and may disappear when you lie down.Pain, Aching, discomfort in the area, particularly during physical activity, bending over, or coughing. Severe discomfort/ pain/ redness is a sign of complications.
Emergency / Complications:
Hernia becomes trapped (incarcerated) or loses blood flow (strangulated), it is a medical emergency. Need to seek immediate help if someobe with hernia experience sudden, severe, and worsening pain.
A bulge that turns red, purple, or dark.Nausea and vomiting with Inability to pass gas or have a bowel movement.
Diagnosis:
Doctors typically diagnose hernias through a physical exam, though ultrasounds or CT scans may be used gor better delineation.
Treatment:
Surgical repair is the standard treatment may be Laparoscopicor open. Surgery involves pushing the protruding tissue back into place and reinforcing the weakened muscle wall with surgical mesh in adults. In childhood hernia repair no mesh is usually given.
Laparoscopic hernia repair is a minimally invasive surgery where a surgeon makes three or four tiny incisions, uses a camera (laparoscope) to view the area, and pushes protruding tissue back into place. A synthetic mesh is then secured over the weak spot in the abdominal wall to prevent recurrence.
Laparoscopies are highly effective for most abdominal wall hernias. They are especially recommended for:
1.Inguinal (groin) hernias
2.Ventral or incisional hernias
3.Bilateral hernias (hernias on both sides simultaneously)
4.Recurrent hernias
5. Hiatus hernia
Most patients go home the same day and return to early work.
Less Pain
Less scar
reduced chance of infection
Low hernia recurrence.
