A snakebite does not have to look severe at the bite site to become a neurological emergency.
The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Government of India, notes that neuroparalytic symptoms after cobra bites may appear within about 30 minutes to 6 hours, while some species—particularly kraits—can show a delayed onset of 6–12 hours. Ptosis after krait bite has even been documented much later during hospital observation.
This matters because a person may initially have little to suggest the severity of the envenoming locally, yet neurological weakness can develop later. India’s National Action Plan describes elapid envenoming as capable of producing flaccid paralysis, with neurotoxic signs potentially progressing to generalised paralysis and respiratory arrest.
