🦴 LUMBAR DISC PROLAPSE: WHAT REALLY HAPPENS INSIDE YOUR SPINE?

Many people believe that all low back pain is caused by muscle strain. However, in some cases, the real problem lies deeper within the spine.

A lumbar disc prolapse, commonly known as a slipped or herniated disc, occurs when the soft gel-like center of an intervertebral disc (nucleus pulposus) pushes through the outer fibrous ring (annulus fibrosus). When this protruding disc material irritates or compresses a nearby nerve root, it can result in significant pain and neurological symptoms.

Common symptoms may include:

✔ Low back pain
✔ Pain radiating down the buttock and leg (Sciatica)
✔ Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
✔ Burning or electric shock-like sensations
✔ Muscle weakness in the lower limb
✔ Difficulty standing, walking, or sitting for prolonged periods

The most commonly affected spinal levels are L4-L5 and L5-S1, which bear a significant amount of the body’s weight and movement stresses.

Several factors may contribute to disc prolapse, including:

• Poor posture
• Repetitive bending and lifting
• Sedentary lifestyle
• Obesity
• Age-related disc degeneration
• Sudden twisting injuries
• Prolonged sitting

The good news is that many patients improve with conservative management. Physiotherapy plays a vital role in reducing pain, improving mobility, restoring strength, and helping individuals return to their daily activities safely.

Early assessment and appropriate treatment are important. Ignoring symptoms for long periods may lead to worsening nerve irritation and functional limitations.

Understanding the cause of your pain is the first step toward recovery.

🛑Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a common condition caused by compression of the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel at the wrist. It often develops due to repetitive hand movements, prolonged computer use, wrist injuries, diabetes, pregnancy, or inflammatory conditions.

Common Symptoms:
• Numbness and tingling in the thumb, index, middle, and half of the ring finger
• Wrist and hand pain, especially at night
• Weak grip strength
• Difficulty holding objects or performing fine motor tasks

Early diagnosis and proper physiotherapy can help reduce symptoms, improve hand function, and prevent long-term nerve damage.

🛑“Neck Pain or a Trapped Nerve? Most People Don’t Know the Difference!”

Not every neck pain is the same. Some people have simple muscle-related neck pain, while others may have nerve compression causing pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness radiating into the arm.

Learn the key differences and understand when your symptoms may need professional evaluation.

✅ Local Neck Pain
✅ Pain Radiating to the Arm
✅ Numbness & Tingling
✅ Muscle Weakness
✅ Simple Self-Assessment Tips

🔍 Special Tests That May Indicate Cervical Radiculopathy

✅ Spurling’s Test
When gentle compression of the neck reproduces pain, tingling, or numbness radiating down the arm, it may suggest cervical nerve root irritation or compression.

✅ Bakody’s Sign (Shoulder Abduction Relief Test)
When placing the hand on top of the head reduces arm pain or tingling, it may indicate cervical nerve root involvement.

⚠️ A positive test does not confirm the diagnosis by itself. These findings should always be interpreted along with a thorough clinical assessment.
