Autism (ASD) is highly heterogeneous — no single diet works for everyone because the condition involves diverse genetic, metabolic, neurological, sensory, and environmental factors. What helps one person may have no effect or even cause issues for another Because…

✅1. Autism Is a Spectrum with Many Underlying Causes

✅2. Food Selectivity and Sensory Differences Vary

✅3. Gastrointestinal and Immune Factors Differ

✅4. Nutritional Status and Deficiencies Are Person-Specific

✅5. Diet is one part of the process.. healing is much deeper..

💡Individual assessment is key: Work with a registered dietitian experienced in ASD, plus relevant medical tests

The vagus nerve (Cranial Nerve X or CN X) is the longest and most complex cranial nerve in the body. Its name comes from the Latin word for “wandering,” because it travels a long, meandering path from the brainstem all the way down into the abdomen.

It is the main nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system — the “rest-and-digest” branch of the autonomic nervous system. It helps the body calm down after stress, slow the heart rate, promote digestion, and support recovery and repair.

What Does the Vagus Nerve Connect To?❓
The vagus nerve carries both motor (commands from the brain) and sensory (information going back to the brain) signals. It connects to many key organs like the brain, abdominal organs, chest and neck.

The Gut-Brain Axis and the Vagus Nerve Connection♾️

The gut-brain axis is the two-way communication highway between your brain and your digestive system (gut). The vagus nerve is the primary direct neural link in this axis.

Histamine overload (or histamine intolerance) in autism refers to a notable overlap where individuals on the autism spectrum (ASD) often show signs of histamine dysregulation, mast cell activation, or related issues that can worsen or contribute to certain symptoms.

Hi I am Dr. Risha Sharma

I am a functional medicine doctor, Ayurvedic physician and naturopath specialising in functional approach to autism.

Follow along as we discuss the fascinating world of the gut microbiome and its profound connections to health—particularly in the context of autism spectrum disorder.

For the past 11 years, I have had the privilege of working directly with individuals across the globe, with a special focus on children on the autism spectrum and their families.

Through consultations, personalized support programs, and collaborative efforts in diverse cultural and geographic settings, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges many face, including gastrointestinal issues that often accompany autism. These real-world experiences have deepened my understanding of how the trillions of microbes in our gut—collectively known as the gut microbiome—play a pivotal role far beyond digestion.

Emerging research continues to illuminate the gut-brain axis: the bidirectional communication pathway linking our intestinal microbes to brain function, behavior, and neurodevelopment.

Studies show that children with autism frequently exhibit distinct microbiome profiles, with alterations that may influence symptoms through immune modulation, metabolite production, and neural signaling.
