We spend a lot of time talking about what a breastfeeding baby needs.

But what about the mother? 💜

Breastfeeding increases nutritional demands, but mothers don’t need special foods or “milk-boosting” drinks simply because they’re breastfeeding.

A varied diet. Enough food. Fluids according to thirst. Rest and recovery. And people around her who make it possible for her to get them.

Instead of asking, “What should she eat to make more milk?”, perhaps we should also ask:

“What can we do to take better care of her?”

A good latch is important — but what really matters is effective milk transfer.

How do you know a feed is working?

Look and listen for slow, deep sucks with pauses and swallowing. Baby should gradually relax during the feed, and over time, regular wet nappies and appropriate weight gain tell us much more than how long or how often a baby feeds.

Day 2 | STRENGTHEN EFFECTIVE FEEDING.

Good support. Correct information. Timely help. 💜

A strong breastfeeding journey begins with a supported start. 💜

Skin-to-skin contact, early initiation of breastfeeding and keeping mother and baby together can help breastfeeding get off to a good start.

This World Breastfeeding Week, we’re looking at the simple things that help breastfeeding work — and how we can strengthen them.

💬 Let’s Talk To***co Day 6
🌿 WHY PREVENTION MATTERS

When we think about to***co, we often think about smoking-related disease.

But prevention is about much more than avoiding illness—it’s about protecting your future health, your fitness, and the people around you.

To***co increases the risk of:
❤️ Heart disease
🧠 Stroke
🫁 Lung disease
🎗 Cancer
🏃 Reduced fitness and endurance

And to***co smoke doesn’t affect only the person using it.

🚬 First-hand smoke — inhaled by the to***co user
💨 Second-hand smoke — breathed in by people nearby
🪑 Third-hand smoke — harmful residue left behind on clothes, furniture, cars, toys, and surfaces

There is no safe level of to***co smoke exposure.

The best time to protect your health is before disease begins.

🌱 Small choices today can create a healthier tomorrow.

🚭 QUITTING TO***CO IS HARD.
And that doesn’t mean you’re weak.

Ni****ne dependence affects the brain, behaviour, emotions, and daily routines — which is why quitting can feel difficult even when someone truly wants to stop.

Cravings are real. Withdrawal is real. Relapse can happen.

But so is recovery.

Support, understanding, and the right strategies can make quitting more achievable and sustainable.

This World No To***co Day, let’s replace judgment with conversation 🌿

What matters most to people as they age or live with serious illness is often deeply personal.

Not just treatment.
Not just tests.

But things like:
• staying independent
• walking without fear of falling
• remaining comfortable
• staying at home
• preserving dignity
• remaining mentally sharp
• feeling understood and supported

These conversations are an important part of both healthy ageing and supportive palliative care.

Because good healthcare is not only about treating disease —
it is also about understanding what matters most to the person living through it.

“I want my family to understand my wishes.”

Serious illness and ageing often bring difficult decisions and emotional conversations.

Many people want:
• their preferences to be heard
• their values to be respected
• their loved ones to feel prepared and supported
• care that aligns with what matters most to them

Supportive geriatric and palliative care includes creating space for honest, compassionate conversations — with patients and families together.

Because understanding someone’s wishes is an important part of caring well.

“I want to remain mentally sharp.”

Many older adults worry about changes in memory, attention, confidence, or thinking — sometimes silently.

Healthy ageing is not only about physical health.
Cognitive wellbeing, emotional health, sleep, social connection, movement, and meaningful daily activity all matter deeply.

Early recognition of cognitive changes, supportive care, and maintaining function and engagement can help people continue living with confidence and dignity.

Because preserving clarity, connection, and identity matters too.

“I want to stay in my own home.”

For many older adults and people living with serious illness, home represents:
• familiarity
• comfort
• routine
• identity
• family connection
• independence

Sometimes, with the right support, guidance, symptom management, rehabilitation, and family planning, people can continue to remain safely and comfortably at home for longer.

Good geriatric and supportive care is not only about treatment —
it is also about understanding where people feel most secure, supported, and themselves.

“I want comfort.”

Comfort is not a small outcome.

For many people living with frailty, chronic illness, cancer, or advanced disease, comfort may mean:
• relief from pain
• easier breathing
• better sleep
• reduced anxiety
• less fatigue
• emotional support
• feeling safe and heard

Palliative and supportive care focuses on improving quality of life through every stage of illness — alongside appropriate medical treatment and care.

Because comfort, dignity, and quality of life matter deeply.
