Every Friday, I make time to sit down and string flowers for my pooja room.
It is a simple ritual, but one I deeply enjoy. The fragrance of fresh flowers, the quiet rhythm of poo thodukaradhu, and finally adorning the Gods and it is time that feels entirely my own.
Like most women, my days are filled with many roles. I am a doctor, a surgeon, I run a clinic, attend meetings and academic programmes, and have a family and home that are very much a part of my life.
And somewhere amidst all of this, I have realised how important it is not to lose the things that bring us joy.
For me, this is one of them.
Women are so accustomed to making time for everyone and everything around us that doing something simply because we love doing it can easily become the last thing on the list.
It shouldn’t.
Whether it is music, gardening, reading, painting, dancing, cooking, a sport, or simply sitting quietly with a cup of coffee and hold on to something that is yours.
We can take on many roles and many responsibilities. But somewhere in that very full life, we must make a little room for ourselves too.
For me, Friday flowers are that little room.
