Drawing Kolam - Reduce Stress & Improve Brain Activity

Every morning, in most parts of India, an almost identical ritual will take place. Housewives will sweep the entrances of their home and sprinkle it with some water. They will then decorate their home entrance with a kolam.

A kolam is a geometric drawing created with rice flour. Its design can vary from simple and small to colourful and complex. Regardless of its design, the kolam is a customary Indian culture that has many benefits to one’s life.

Drawing a kolam is seen as a great physical exercise. When one bends their body to draw the kolam, their back bone is bent in a position known as the Yogasana. The Yogasana is believed to strengthen the back bone, thus also giving the waist and hip a good exercise.

Completing a kolam increases one’s creativity and concentration. This is because, it requires a lot of focus and patience to draw a kolam. Kolam are also believed to reduce stress and improve brain activity.

Positive brainwaves are released by looking at the kolam and this will put their mind at ease, making them comfortable, relaxed and happy.

Weekday mornings are never appealing to the brain. However, there are certain things you can do to ease the torturous time and effort to wake up, refresh, and energize your mind. Check out our tips below:

Drink Water — Drink a glass of water immediately after you wake up to kick up your metabolism and de-fog your brain.

Don’t “Snooze” — You’re setting yourself up to feel lazy & unmotivated throughout the day when you delay waking up and hit “snooze” multiple times in the morning. Pick a time that gives you enough sleep but also enough time to go through your morning routine without rushing, and wake up when your first alarm rings.

Open the Blinds — Sunlight has a direct effect on the activity in our brains. When we deprive our brains of light, we will stay in a groggy, sleep-like state of consciousness. Bright light helps shift our brain waves to higher frequencies and triggers the release of brain-happy neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine.

Exercise in the Morning — The act of exercising in the morning might sound horrendous if you’ve never done it, but besides obvious health reasons, it’ll actually give you more energy throughout the whole day. Try sleeping in your workout clothes to lessen the chances of making excuses in the morning.

Turn up the Music — Listen to some upbeat tunes as you get ready in the morning. Studies have shown that music is the one stimulus that lights up the entire brain on a PET scan. Music helps the brain release dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps to regulate the brain’s pleasure and reward centres, as well as emotional responses and motivation.

Take a Cold Shower — No explanation needed. It’s horrible. But it works.
Don’t treat Coffee like a “Drug” — On days you feel more energized, try to forego the coffee, or at least try cutting down the amount you drink everyday. If you absolutely need a pick-me-up, try drinking some brain-healthy green tea instead!

Eat Breakfast — Take the phrase “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” seriously. Breakfast gives your brain vital nutrients that it needs in order to optimally carry out mental processes throughout the day. Think of it as fuel for your body, without it, you’ll run out of fumes! Try including some brain-healthy foods in your breakfast diet.

Talk to Someone — Engage in some light chit-chat with a family member, friend, or co-worker in the morning. Even though you might not feel like it, taking the initiative to engage in a conversation really helps to get your mind & body out of a “zombie-like” state.

You can follow followings tips must relief from stress.
How can you manage stress?
1. Identify your stressors.
You can’t fight it if you don’t know what it is. If a certain situation or person at work pushes your buttons, own that feeling.

2. Don’t ignore stress.
(Because it won’t go away on its own.) When you know you will be encountering this person or situation, stand up straight, put a smile on your face, and see how much better things go when you approach them positively and confidently.

3. Don’t think you will eliminate all stress at once.
Your health, emotional state and the day’s events are going to affect your stress levels, and some days will be better than others. Identifying what bothers you is a start. Then tell yourself you have to go deal with so-and-so, or that the deadline you used to think was so far away is now here. Make it fun if you can, but keep your focus and resolve.

4. Avoid alcohol.
Why do people drink when they are stressed out? Because, for the short term, it works; intoxicated people aren’t usually stressed about too much. But that only lasts so long. Having a few drinks with friends after work can be a positive, bonding activity, in which case, you are socializing. Using alcohol as a way of managing stress, on the other hand, is a negative coping mechanism, one that could even result in a chemical dependency on alcohol and a lifetime of trouble.

5. Eat right.
You know what’s good for you and what’s bad for you. Don’t eat a lot of refined sugar, fatty foods like potato chips or white-flour-based foods; these snacks might satisfy cravings, but you usually end up hungry again soon after consuming them. Eat more fruits and vegetables, and if you don’t like them, find ways to enjoy them. Maybe you dip them in organic peanut butter or almond butter, or you find a vegetable or fruit you have never had before like papaya or bok choy. A couple other tips: Eat at times of your choosing and in pre-portioned amounts, and drink water instead of soda or energy drinks.

6. Exercise regularly.
With exercise, you will feel good physically as your muscles tense and relax. You will also feel better mentally because exercise lowers hormones such as cortisol, which causes stress, and causes your brain to release endorphins, the hormones that make us feel happy and content. If running isn’t feasible, try walking; you’ll receive almost as many health benefits, and most everyone can do it. You could also try weightlifting or a group exercise class like yoga. Choose something that you can fit into your weekly schedule. Ideally, you should exercise daily, but even three times a week will make a big difference in how you feel.

7. Find some alone time.
Take 15 to 30 minutes out of each day to be alone and reflect. People might demand your time throughout the day, but decide which part of it is yours, and stick to it. This will make you a better friend, family member and co-worker, and will help you manage your stress for the day. During this time, you can enjoy your coffee with a newspaper, close your eyes and relax, or practice any suitable form of mediation; even just a few deep breaths with your eyes closed will provide immediate relief. This alone time will help you achieve focus, and you will be able to approach your duties calm and assured.

8. Get good sleep.
Waking up refreshed is key to battling stress. A couple tips: Have a set bedtime and bedtime ritual. Enjoy a cup of herbal tea while reading, and think about giving up your favorite late-night TV if it keeps you from getting an adequate amount of sleep, which is typically eight hours. If you have trouble falling asleep, try some natural remedies before asking your doctor for sleeping pills. You’ve probably heard of drinking warm milk, but did you know cherries, bananas and sweet potatoes also have chemical properties that help you sleep?
