Think living with half a liver is impossible? Your liver is one of the few organs that can regenerate. That's why, in selected patients, removing only the diseased portion is often enough.

Happy to share with you that I spoke at the recent meeting at IMA Kodambakkam on “The Gut Never Lies — GI Red Flags Every Doctor Should Recognise.”

Most stomach complaints are harmless. But occasionally the body gives a quiet signal that shouldn’t be ignored — and the talk was built around seven patients treated for something simple before the real diagnosis emerged.

A simple way to remember the warning signs:

Anaemia that keeps coming back
Bleeding, or a lasting change in bowel habit
Can’t swallow, or losing weight without trying
Dark urine and yellow eyes, or pain far worse than it looks

Any of these lasting more than two to three weeks deserves proper evaluation, not another course of tablets.

Grateful to the IMA Kodambakkam team for the invitation — and to the senior colleagues who made it such an open, interactive discussion.

The gut whispers before it screams. Our job is to listen.

🍎 Should you eat fruits right after a meal?
Many of us grew up eating fruit as dessert — but as a gastroenterologist, I often get asked whether this is actually a good habit.
I recently spoke to Times Now about this, and here’s the short version:
For most healthy people, timing doesn’t matter much. But if you deal with bloating, indigestion, IBS, or are managing blood sugar (diabetes/prediabetes), eating fruit right after a heavy meal can make things worse — increased gas, discomfort, or a bigger blood sugar spike.
A simple fix: try having your fruit 30-60 minutes before your meal, or as a separate snack between meals instead.

A patient came to me last month with gallstone pancreatitis.

She had known about her gallstones for two years. No surgery, she had decided. Her diet was clean. Her pain was manageable.

Until it wasn’t.

Gallstones are among the most common — and most misunderstood — conditions in surgical practice. The absence of pain does not mean the absence of risk.

In this article, I have covered everything patients need to know — symptoms, complications, the myths that delay treatment, and why laparoscopic cholecystectomy remains the safest and most effective solution.

If you or someone you know has been living with gallstones, this is worth your time. 👇

What does it take to become a super-specialist surgeon in India?

Many people see the doctor they meet in the clinic or the surgeon in the operating room. What often goes unseen is the journey behind that white coat.

Becoming a super-specialist is not just about earning degrees. It is a commitment spanning well over a decade of medical education, multiple highly competitive entrance examinations, years of rigorous surgical training, countless nights on call, missed family occasions, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence. Even after formal training, the learning never truly ends—through fellowships, workshops, conferences, new technologies and continuous skill refinement.

No one completes this journey alone. It is made possible by the unwavering support of parents, teachers, mentors, colleagues, friends and family, who make countless sacrifices along the way.

This infographic is not a celebration of one person’s achievements, but a tribute to the journey that thousands of super-specialists across India undertake in their pursuit of providing the very best care to their patients.

Medicine teaches us that learning is lifelong, and every patient reminds us why the journey is worth it.

Years of learning. A lifetime of healing.
