*Upper Airway + Sleep: What evidence shows*

Upper airway = nose, mouth, pharynx, larynx. When this "tube" narrows/collapses during sleep, it directly fragments sleep. Here are key evidence-based findings:

*1. Upper airway obstruction → sleep fragmentation + arousals*

*Study:* Selective oropharyngeal anesthesia in normal males

*Finding:* When upper airway reflexes were blocked by topical anesthesia, obstructive apneas/hypopneas jumped from 3/night to 13/night vs control. Arousals also doubled.

*Takeaway:* Upper airway reflexes actively keep the airway open during sleep. Block them = more breathing pauses + more awakenings.

*Study:* Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome UARS

*Finding:* Even without full apneas, increased upper airway resistance causes "respiratory effort-related arousals RERAs". Patients have AHI
