Dear Citizens of Chennai!
The Wheelchair Accessible Wooden Pathway has been currently dismantled and completely removed due to non availability of proper periodic maintenance inspite of repeated reminders to Greater Chennai Corporation
Though Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is planning to provide rubber mats as replacement to Wooden Pathway, as a collective decision Disability Rights Alliance have not given confirmation for going ahead with the mat pathway in terms of Accessibility for everyone.
Rubber mats are currently at the Blue Flag certified Marina Beach. The problems generally identified by our team and opinion from some of the public are that the mats are uneven surfaces, having too much of jerk due to the strips for non slippery surfaces for Wheelchair users and difficult to walk for long distances without bilateral handrails for supported walking people and senior citizens.
With the discussions going to take place soon with GCC, we request everyone to share your feedback and the problems you're facing during your visit to the beaches on the rubber mats as well as the wooden pathway.
