Tracheostomy Decannulation: When and How is the Tracheostomy Tube Removed?

A tracheostomy tube is not always permanent. Tracheostomy decannulation is the process of safely removing the tracheostomy tube once a patient has recovered enough to breathe normally without it.

👨‍⚕️ Who is eligible for decannulation?
- Patients who can breathe comfortably on their own.
- Those with a clear and protected airway.
- Patients who can cough effectively and clear secretions.
- Individuals who have successfully passed the doctor's assessment.

🔍 How is the procedure done?
• A detailed medical evaluation is performed.
• The tracheostomy tube may be downsized or capped for a trial period.
• Breathing and oxygen levels are closely monitored.
• If the patient tolerates the trial well, the tube is safely removed by the doctor.
• The opening usually closes naturally over time with proper care.
