🦟 Dengue: Fever, Platelet Fall & When to Seek Medical Care
Dengue is a common mosquito-borne viral infection that can cause high fever, severe body pain, headache, pain behind the eyes, nausea and weakness.
One of the biggest concerns during dengue is a fall in platelet count. However, a low platelet count alone does not necessarily mean that platelets need to be transfused. Doctors assess the overall clinical condition, platelet trend, hydration, blood pressure, urine output and other blood parameters before deciding on treatment.
Importantly, complications can sometimes occur when the fever starts coming down. Watch for warning signs such as persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, bleeding, excessive drowsiness or restlessness, breathing difficulty, reduced urine output or sudden worsening of the patient’s condition.
Treatment mainly involves adequate fluids, careful monitoring and appropriate fever control. Avoid self-medication with aspirin or ibuprofen, as these can increase bleeding risk.
At Hande Hospital, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Goutham Kumar A.P., M.D. (General Medicine), Consultant in Internal Medicine & Diabetology, who will be treating patients with dengue, fever and other general medical conditions, along with diabetes and hypertension.
