Since 1999, Prof. Dr. SM Balaji, world renowned Craniofacial Surgeon and director, Balaji Dental and Craniofacial Hospital, Chennai, has made regular visits to Seychelles at the invitation of the Ministry of Health, Government of Seychelles, providing advanced craniofacial and reconstructive surgical care entirely through their government healthcare system. This legacy was formally honoured during the 50th Anniversary Independence Celebrations of the Republic of Seychelles where he received a personal government invitation to attend the 50th Anniversary Independence celebrations.

At the celebrations, Prof. Dr. SM Balaji had the privilege of interacting with the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Shri. Prof. Dr. SM Balaji Delivers Lecture on Facial Asymmetry – Understanding, Managing and Mastering at AIME 2026 in Paris, France

Prof. Dr. SM Balaji represented the International College of Maxillofacial Surgery as well as was one of the very few Indians at AIME 2026 (Aesthetic Innovation and Medical Excellence) Congress, held at the Palais des Congrès de Paris, France. This is the world’s leading international forum dedicated to aesthetic, reconstructive, and craniofacial surgery.

The congress brought together a carefully selected faculty of internationally recognized experts to examine emerging advances in aesthetic medicine, regenerative therapies, artificial intelligence, digital technologies, and complex surgical reconstruction under the scientific theme, “Pushing Boundaries, Preserving Identity.”

As part of the scientific programme, Prof. Dr. SM Balaji delivered the invited lecture, “Facial Asymmetry: Understanding, Managing, and Mastering,” during the session on Management of Facial Asymmetry, alongside eminent surgeons and academicians from multiple countries, all internationally reputed peers. World renowned Surgeons - Prof. Ashraf Ayoub, Glasgow, UK, Prof. Sajjad Walji, Netherlands and Prof. Albert Claude Benhamou, France chaired the session.
Facial asymmetry remains one of the most challenging areas in craniofacial surgery, requiring an integrated understanding of skeletal, soft tissue, functional, and aesthetic considerations.

The session highlighted contemporary approaches and evolving strategies in the diagnosis, planning, and management of facial asymmetry correction in Crouzon syndrome, hemifacial microsomia and craniostenosis. This lecture and participation reflect the continuing contribution of Indian craniofacial surgery, especially Prof. Dr. SM Balaji to global scientific dialogue and international collaboration.

The International College for Maxillofacial Surgery (ICMFS) had a significant academic presence at AIME (Aesthetic Innovation and Medical Excellence) 2026, Paris, through the endorsement of a scientific session on Orthognathic Surgery, highlighting the College’s commitment to advancing global education, innovation, and excellence in maxillofacial and craniofacial surgery.

The Orthognathic Surgery session, endorsed by ICMFS, was chaired by Prof. Dr. SM Balaji (India), Prof. Renato Isufi (Albania), Prof. Joël Ferri (France), and Prof. Kurt Vinzenz (Austria). The distinguished faculty included Prof. Cesar A. Guerrero (USA), Prof. Ashraf Ayoub (United Kingdom), Dr. Eduardo Sánchez Jauregui (Spain), Prof. Guillaume Haiat (France), Dr. Félix Berriat (France), Dr. Renato Isufi (Albania), Dr. Thierry Loncle (France), and Dr. Ugo Heller (France).

Scientific deliberations covered a wide spectrum of contemporary topics, including computer-assisted orthognathic surgery, virtual surgical planning, intraoperative validation, piezosurgery, surgery-first protocols, management of facial harmony, aging considerations following orthognathic surgery, orbital reconstruction, and advances in facial trauma management. The programme reflected the growing convergence of digital technologies, precision surgery, and long-term outcome analysis in modern craniofacial practice.

The participation of internationally recognized faculty from North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa underscored the global reach of both AIME and ICMFS, providing a platform for meaningful scientific exchange among leaders shaping the future of maxillofacial and craniofacial surgery. As Secretary of ICMFS, Prof. S.M. Balaji contributed to strengthening the College’s academic engagement within the congress and fostering collaboration among leading international specialists.

Chennai based Prof. Dr. SM Balaji, of Balaji Dental and Craniofacial hospital was recently invited to chair a session on Advances in Orbital Trauma at the AIME 2026 (Aesthetic Innovation and Medical Excellence) Congress in Paris, France. Prof. Dr. SM Balaji is a world renowned orbital surgeon and has extensive experience in orbital surgery for over three decades.

The session on Advances in Orbital Surgery was co-chaired by Prof. Cesar A. Guerrero (USA), Prof. Dr. SM Balaji (India), and Prof. Abdelouahed Karim (Morocco). The programme featured presentations by Prof. Othman Altuwairgi (Saudi Arabia) on Orbital Trauma, Dr. Dekel Shilo (Israel) on Orbital Reconstruction: Pitfalls and Pearls, Prof. Ilanko Ilankovan (United Kingdom) on Mastering the Complexity of Orbital Trauma, and Prof. Irina Khrustaleva (Russia) on Periorbital Volumization: From Filler Injections to Modern Surgical Approaches. The session concluded with an interactive expert panel discussion addressing contemporary challenges in orbital reconstruction and periorbital surgery.

The session showcased the breadth of contemporary craniofacial surgery, spanning orbital trauma and reconstruction, digital surgical planning, computer-assisted surgery, orthognathic correction, facial aesthetics, long-term treatment stability, and emerging technologies shaping the future of patient care.

As Chair, Prof. Dr. SM Balaji facilitated scientific discussions, moderated expert interactions, and guided exchanges among internationally recognized leaders from North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The invitation to chair these sessions reflects the growing importance of global collaboration in advancing evidence-based surgical practice and improving outcomes for patients with complex craniofacial conditions.
