When one of Chennai’s most iconic landmarks turns green, it is more than just a beautiful sight, it is a reminder that millions of people are living with a disease that is often silent until it is too late.
Today, on World Hepatitis Day, seeing the Ripon Building illuminated in green is a powerful message that liver health deserves our attention. It is heartening to see Chennai stand with the global movement to raise awareness about viral hepatitis and the importance of prevention, early diagnosis and timely treatment.
As the Managing Trustee of Chennai Liver Foundation, this day holds special meaning for me.
For years, our mission has been simple, to make liver health a public health priority.
Through awareness campaigns, free screening initiatives, educational programmes, research, and community outreach, we have worked towards ensuring that fewer families have to face the consequences of liver disease that could have been prevented or detected earlier.
This year’s World Hepatitis Day theme, “Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down,” is a reminder that we already have the knowledge, vaccines, diagnostics and treatments. What we need now is to break down the barriers that prevent people from getting tested, treated and protected.
Awareness is where prevention begins.
If today’s green illumination encourages even one person to get tested, get vaccinated, or start a conversation about liver health, it has already made a difference.
On this World Hepatitis Day, let us all take one step closer to a future where hepatitis is no longer a public health threat.
